VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) A thief, pretending to be an actor, gets involved in a murder investigation in Hollywood when he befriends a private detective.
2) The pulp neo-noir element overshadows the black comedy movie.
3) Val Kilmer as “Gay” Perry took the highlight.

CONS –
1) Shane Black direction is good but the primary plot & screenplay is tacky.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) Sherlock Holmes foils Professor Moriarty‘s grand plan to instigate a world war among European countries by assassinating one of the ambassadors in a peace summit in Switzerland.
2) The action cinematography makes this movie worth watching. Even a mediocre story is elevated with slow-motion fight sequences and bullet-time scenes.
3) The movie can be deconstructed into major action scenes. The Watson’s bachelor party; Shootout On The Train; Arms-factory scene; Forest Chase Scene, and the climactic chess scene over Reichenbach Falls.
4) Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes was a treat.

CONS –
1) The entire sub-plot with Noomi Rapace finding her brother was a drag.

QUOTE –
Professor Moriarty: You see, hidden within the unconscious, there is an insatiable desire for conflict. So, you’re not fighting me, so much as you are the human condition. All I want to do is own the bullets and the bandages.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

CULT – 1

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) The epic finale of the 11-year-old journey culminating with the 22nd film. A journey started by Jon Favreau, led by Joss Whedon, and concluded by the Russo brothers. A rare grand emotional movie event of this generation.
2) The time travel plot enabled the screenwriters to add all the good & bad, major & minor characters from the franchise to make one final cameo in this grand finale.
3) Captain America lifting Mjolnir is got to be the most epic scene of this movie. A scene 4 years in the making.
4) A fulfilling climax for Steve Rogers.
5) Fun filled storyline with great comic-relief from Ant-Man and Thor “The Dude” Lebowski.
6) An epic finale needs an epic sacrifice. It had to be Tony Stark.

CONS –

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 1
CULT – 1

Verdict – 5/5

Pros –
1) A comic-book movie plot gains weight when the heroes hit rock-bottom and a triumph costs enormous sacrifice. This was not even a triumph but the casualty is huge.
2) Not a single boring sub-plot.No time wasted on built-up.High on emotions, not just from the Avengers but Thanos as well.
3) In spite of all the battle sequences, the comic element was not compromised.
4) The jaw-dropping climax that will put Rains of Castameres to shame.
5) Thanos on one side, single-handedly balanced the scale with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on the other side. Probably the best multi-starrer.
6) Avengers musical theme used extensively for the first time.
7) The presence of Red Skull on Vormir left a lot of unanswered questions.
8) Ebony Maw: Boba Fett of MCU.

Cons –
1) We know the timeline will eventually get reset in Infinity War II.

Tony Stark: I’m sorry.Earth is closed today.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –

1) Spider-Man theme song playing with opening Marvel logo
2) Quick Civil War rewind from Peter Parker perspective.
3) Battle of New York – the way Marvel is handling that alien attack is unprecedented. Usually in comic books universe, devastating battles are forgotten and people go back to their normal lives but Marvel is treating this plot as MCU’s 9/11
4) Return of the socially inept and introvert Peter Parker. Marvel learned from Sony and didn’t made the same mistake as they did with Andrew Garfield.
5) MJ plot twist.

CONS –

1) Nothing worth in this movie for a re-watch
2) Mediocre post-credit scene
3) Summer blockbuster, multi-billions dollars franchise, A-list star-cast but still a mediocre “story” developed by 2 movie-writers and 6 screenwriters

Verdict – 2/5

Pros –
1) Huge ensemble but it’s a David Strathairn show – The defiant cigarette smoking broadcast journalist.

Cons –
1) It’s a documentary – if any movie is using prime elements of the plot from archive news footage, don’t sweat to call it a feature film.
2) Pretentious movie – lacking adrenaline of a newsroom.

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

STORY – 0
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 0

CULT – 0

Verdict – 1/5

Pros –

1) Crossbones fighting Cap. America
2) Return Of General Ross
3) Ant-man & Spider-man should be in a MCU movie teaming together : Paul Rudd made best of his short screen-time.
4) Berlin airport battle : Giant-Man sequence
5) Daniel Brühl : Convincing as always
6) Re-enactment of Civil War # 7 Cover Art.

Cons –

1) Basically this movie core secret is Bucky responsible for killing Howard Stark
2) Martin Freeman : too less screen time
3) Tom Holland as Peter Parker : Can’t let Toby out of my head,he’ll remain the definitive Spidey.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 0

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) “Veronica” vs. Hulk
2) Opening Sokovia Battle; Absolute comic-book action
3) Dark Haunting visions instigated by Scarlet Witch
4) Ultron: supervillain with a personality
5) Superhero conversations – just like The Avengers (2012)
6) Paul Bettany finally making a physical appearance as Vision (and lifting “Mjolnir” ).
7) Seoul street battle (with flying truck scene)
8) Hawkeye’s family

CONS –
1) No post end credit scene – it was a bummer
2) The story is multi-layered in the first half but ended up with a mediocre AI droid with the most cliched mindset.
3) Loki’s scepter is “still” the cornerstone of the story.
4) The shallow character development of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.
5) Andy Serkis – strong screen presence but less screen time (hoping he’ll return in MCU)
6) Thor and Dr. Selvig plot – leaves too many unanswered questions
