VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) Story of Le Mans ’66 chronicling the heroics of Ford Motor Company led by Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles.
2) Tragic to know how corporate narrow mindedness cost Ken Miles the racing triple crown.

CONS –
1) It’s a one-time watch generic sports drama with predictable twists and turns.
2) After Logan (2017), we’re expecting something bigger from James Mangold.

QUOTE –
Carroll Shelby: There’s a point at 7,000 RPM… where everything fades. The machine becomes weightless. Just disappears. And all that’s left is a body moving through space and time. 7,000 RPM. That’s where you meet it. You feel it coming. It creeps up on you, close in your ear. Asks you a question. The only question that matters. Who are you?

VERDICT – 1/5

PROS –
1) Matt Smith as Parson Collins gave suffiecient comic relief.

CONS –
1) A preposterous and futile attempt to amalgamate Jane Austen’s classic with zombie fiction.
2) Mediocre fight and action scenes.
3) We already have definitive versions of the story with the 1995 BBC TV Series and Joe Wright’s 2005 movie. This movie was supposed to put more weight on the zombie plot but the love story dominated the plot.

Mr. Darcy: Of all weapons in the world, I now know love to be the most dangerous.

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) A cinematic triumph by Sam Mendes. The entire movie appears as one long shot without any cuts.
2) Best Cinematography award confirmed for Roger Deakins for the second time. Not since Birdman (2014), we have watched such wonder.
3) The movie is mainly a one-man show by George MacKay as Lance Corporal Schofield meeting characters along the way of his mission.

PROS –
1) Quite impressive set designs and production value for a spoof-movie.

CONS –
1) Better watch any Naked Gun movie starring Leslie Nielsen.

QUOTE –
Norman Saint-Sauvage: You’re a strange man, Mr. Smart.
Maxwell Smart: I’m strange?! Listen, fella. Anyone that runs around with pantyhose over their head and tries to make the whole world nude, that’s strange.

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) Leonard Cohen’s songs give a distinct touch to the movie.
2) Hugh Millais as Butler is excellent in that small role. The bargaining scene between Warren Beatty and him is one of the worth-watching scenes of the movie.

CONS –
1) Annoyingly dark cinematography, sloppy editing.
2) An over-rated and boring movie of little consequences. Julie Christie is hardly anywhere.

Butler: That man never killed anyone in his life.

PROS –
1) Nora Ephron magnum opus uplifted with the direction of Rob Reiner.
2) Great editing, great cinematography, effortless performances – a definitive rom-com.
3) Billy Crystal and Bruno Kirby will remind anyone of Jerry & George from Seinfeld. The whole conversational screenplay gives a very Woody Allen touch to the movie.

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) Kareena Kapoor’s monologue. There is a reason why she’s the uncrowned queen of Bollywood.
2) Straight forward screenplay without any annoying sub-plots.

CONS –
1) 90% of the plot already revealed in the trailer.
2) Another lazy soundtrack full of recycled songs. However, it was good to see Sukhbir in “Sauda Khara Khara”.

Dracula (2020 Miniseries)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 0

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) Ep 1: Gripping screenplay; the first episode was somewhat faithful to the original book and also the best in the series.
2) Agatha Van Helsing vs Count Dracula grand dual at the gate of the convent.
3) Ep 2: Climactic 123 years time-leap was surely surprising.
4) Witty one-liners by Count Dracula in all 3 episodes.

CONS –
1) Lucy Westenra sub-plot in Ep 3 was utterly useless. The entire modern-day England twist was disappointing.
2) The quality of the show goes down with every passing episode.
3) Climactic revelations establish Dracula as an ashamed warrior with survival guilt.

QUOTE –

VERDICT – 1/5

PROS –
1) The movie is watchable only when Seth Rogen and Craig Robinson are on the screen.

CONS –
1) Overblown story of “cineautistic” film editor obsessed with A Place in the Sun (1951).
2) Such a waste of talents like Jacki Weaver and Will Ferrell.

QUOTE –

The Lighthouse (2019)

STORY – 1

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) Another psychological thriller studying paranoia in isolation.
2) Both actors justifed their role of two lighthouse keepers with questionable past and dubious personalities.
3) Shot in Black&White in the Movietone ratio gives a certain weight to the entire movie.
4) After The Witch (2015), its Robert Eggers second project and we are sure to expect better from him in this genre.

CONS –
1) A pretentious plot with an ambiguous climax.

QUOTE –
Should pale death, with treble dread, make the ocean caves our bed, God who hears the surges roll deign to save our suppliant soul.
