VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A must watch kung-fu classic from Shaw Brothers. For any kung-fu movie aficionado, this should be the first movie on the watchlist.
2) The training choreography is realistic and extremely rigorous. The chambers are so severe that audiences will feel the burn of the training drill.
3) The back story of tyrannical Tartars helps in developing a strong retribution plot.

CONS –
1) While Shaolin training remains the core of the movie, it doesn’t get much time for San Te avenging the injustice.
2) Absence of a strong prime-villain

QUOTE –
Officer: You’re a Buddhist, show mercy.
San Te: Even Buddha has to conquer evil.

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) An emotional and befitting end of this fan-favorite franchise. The climactic scene where Ip Man asks his son to film his demonstration of Wing Chun on the wooden dummy, knowing that soon he’ll soon succumb to cancer is extremely moving.
2) A much better movie than Ip Man 3 (2015).
3) Danny Chan is definitive Bruce Lee double. His street-fight sequence is probably the best scene in the entire movie.

CONS –
1) Average fight choreography.

VERDICT – 0/5

PROS –
1) Jackie Chan’s prison escape scene got to be the only entertaining scene.

CONS –
1) A darker tone than any previous Jackie Chan movie. It’s very difficult to enjoy his action movie when the comical element is removed.
2) Emotionally disturbed parkour-enthusiast rich brat on a crime spree. There is high production value on action sequences but lacked soul.
3) Weak supporting cast.
