VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) A story about African-American women working in white households in Jackson, Mississippi, during the 1960s. Racism and civil rights are the primary themes of the movie with a generic white-savior.
2) While Viola Davis was there with her gloomy presence, it was Octavia Spencer’s performance which makes this movie watchable.

CONS –
1) Movies exploring racism are often emotionally touching and this movie is also counting on the same formula.
2) This 146-minutes period drama is too long and a one time watch.

Father: Don’t you sometimes feel that this is the kind of life we were meant to live on this earth? Everything we need, everything, right here, right at our fingertips. You know, if only people could have all this and be satisfied, I don’t think there’d be any real problems in the world.

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) The movie started as ‘Fast’ Eddie being a retired pool hustler finding a new talented kid Vincent. But as the movie progresses, the Mentor-Protégé relationship turns into a rivalry.
2) Martin Scorsese gave a proper closure to Eddie’s character.
3) The turning point of the movie is the scene with Amos [played by a young Forest Whitaker] hustling the hustler. It shows how humiliation can invoke dormant pride.

CONS –
1) Just like it’s predecessor, The Hustler (1961), it’s a one time watch slow sports-drama.
