VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) Retired lawman Wyatt Earp arrives in Tombstone, Arizona with his two brothers and their wives to settle down. But he’s reluctantly pulled into the same violent business when the town is wrecked by an outlaw gang called “The Cowboys” which led to the death of one of his brothers.
2) Made in 1993, the movie follows the classic western theme of good vs evil. The second-half of the movie is full of duels, and great gunfights.

CONS –
1) Val Kilmer’s performance as alcoholic Doc Holliday is quite annoying.
2) It’s highly overrated as one of the best western movies released in the 1990s. There is no way it can be compared to Unforgiven (1992), and Dances with Wolves (1990).

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) The best thing happened to Star War since Rogue-One. Honestly, the Lukewalker Saga is now milked enough and the entire storyline around the Lukewalker family doesn’t resonate with this generation.
2) A huge round of applause to Jon Favreau for giving a new breath of life to this franchise. He is the founding father of MCU and he proved his mettle once again.
3) Jaw-dropping concept art montage in each episode’s end credits.
4) The surprise element of “Baby Yoda” is massively promising.
5) Speeder-Bike, AT-ST, Bounty robot IG-11, etc. are some brand new addition to Star Wars tech.
6) The Mandalorian theme by Ludwig Göransson

CONS –
1) This space western got huge influences from Lone Wolf and Cub, Seven Samurai (1954), etc.
2) Moff Gideon [played by Giancarlo Esposito ] – dumb boss villain.

PROS –
1) A wannabe musician boy’s accidental adventure to the Land Of The Dead where he discovers his family’s past.
2) The movie reaffirms the importance of Día de Muertos & the significance of family ofrenda in Mexican culture.
3) Quality animation & vividly colorful cinematography. The biggest asset of the movie is its rich storyline with various twists and turns. One of the best Pixar film since Up (2009), and best Disney animated movie since Wreck-It Ralph (2012).
4) “Remember Me” – The context of the song in the movie is better than the song itself.

CONS –

VERDICT – 3/4

PROS –
1) Adventure of toys who pretend to be lifeless in the presence of humans. Disney struck the gold-mine with this story.
2) Great characters and great voice-actors.
3) Final rescue adventure with the rocket.

CONS –
1) Computer-animated movies cannot match traditionally animated movies. Even by 1995 standard, the 3-D animation is poor.

PROS –
1) A poor boy named Arthur who will the future king of England. The movie is mainly highlighting his adventure with Merlin, the wizard.
2) Merlin vs Madam Mim.
3) The entire bit with squirrels.

CONS –
1) Walt Disney’s presentation for a specific audience.

The Help (2011)

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) A story about African-American women working in white households in Jackson, Mississippi, during the 1960s. Racism and civil rights are the primary themes of the movie with a generic white-savior.
2) While Viola Davis was there with her gloomy presence, it was Octavia Spencer’s performance which makes this movie watchable.

CONS –
1) Movies exploring racism are often emotionally touching and this movie is also counting on the same formula.
2) This 146-minutes period drama is too long for a one time watch.

Swiss Family Robinson (1960)

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) It’s a feel-good Disney’s adventure of a ship-wrecked family based on the 200-year-old novel.
2) The tree-house, the water-wheel, and the animal race at the scenic island are straight out of a fairy tale.
3) The final battle with pirates with traps and coconut bombs was worth watching.

CONS –
1) Lack of a good leading cast. Apart from Sessue Hayakawa as Kuala, and Milton Reid as the hulking pirate, no other have any screen presence.

QUOTE –
Father: Don’t you sometimes feel that this is the kind of life we were meant to live on this earth? Everything we need, everything, right here, right at our fingertips. You know, if only people could have all this and be satisfied, I don’t think there’d be any real problems in the world.

The Color of Money (1986)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 0

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) The movie started as ‘Fast’ Eddie being a retired pool hustler finding a new talented kid Vincent. But as the movie progresses, the Mentor-Protégé relationship turns into a rivalry.
2) Martin Scorsese gave a proper closure to Eddie’s character.
3) The turning point of the movie is the scene with Amos [played by a young Forest Whitaker] hustling the hustler. It shows how humiliation can invoke dormant pride.

CONS –
1) Just like it’s predecessor, The Hustler (1961), it’s a one time watch slow sports-drama.

PROS –
1) A Disney’s family entertainer. A stunt pilot got in the middle of the FBI, Gangsters, Howard Hughes, and Nazis.
2) Timothy Dalton as the suave Hollywood movie star who is actually a Nazi agent.
3) Good supporting cast.
4) Incredible Art Deco-style poster.

CONS –
1) Billy Campbell as the title character. He got no screen presence. Some other 90s actors like Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, etc would have done better justice to the role.

QUOTE –
Cliff Secord: Where’s your stuntman now, Sinclair?
Neville Sinclair: I do my own stunts!
