VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A comedic take on Sherlock Holmes universe where Dr. Watson is the real detective and Holmes is merely an actor playing the fictional creation of Dr. John Watson.
2) The comedy is slightly slapstick in nature but still hilarious. Michael Caine’s performance as the bumbling Sherlock Holmes is extremely amusing.
3) The witty dialogues keep the movie entertaining throughout.
4) While the movie is an out-and-out comedy, the case is not. It’s an equally gripping case of stolen printing plates for £5 banknotes.
5) Jeffrey Jones perfectly fits the bill to play Inspector Lestrade.

CONS –

QUOTE –

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) Christopher Plummer’s debut as the legendary detective.

CONS –
1) A forgettable adaptation of “The Adventure of Silver Blaze”.
2) 30 minutes run time can by no means give proper justice to the story. There is neither any depth in writing nor there is any character development.

QUOTE –
Inspector Gregory: Is there any other point to which you wish to draw my attention?
Sherlock Holmes: To the curious incident of the dog when the horse was led out from the stable.
Inspector Gregory: But the dog did nothing when the horse was led out from the stable.
Sherlock Holmes: That was the curious incident.

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) The legend of Jack the Ripper fused into a new adventure of Sherlock Holmes. Instead of relying on the burden of an existing story, the new story made it an interesting watch.
2) There was a long list of the suspect and it made the movie riveting up to the last minute.
3) Mycroft Holmes’ monologue over Sherlock’s violin recital was amusing.

CONS –
1) John Neville played a very mild-mannered Sherlock Holmes. Donald Houston as Dr. Watson was caricaturish.

QUOTE –
Mycroft Holmes: For Heaven’s sake, stop sawing away on that infernal instrument! It was a sad day when Mother gave it to you, a sad day for her, a sad day for you, a sad day for us all… What I cannot understand is why, since you’ve had that violin with you so long, you never learned to play!

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) Ian Richardson & David Healy’s spot-on performance as Holmes & Watson. The further episodes were canceled due to the arrival of the Granada TV series otherwise these two actors would have given Jeremy Brett & Edward Hardwicke a run for their money.
2) A wholesome Sherlock Holmes adventure which covers almost all aspect of the character. Sherlock in disguise, the irregulars, Watson’s affinity to the female character, Inspector Layton in place of Inspector Lestrade, etc.
3) There is no element of surprise in the movie as the audiences are already made aware of the happenings however the screenplay is still gripping.

CONS –
1) Absence of Mrs. Hudson.

PROS –
1) The plot-twist where Mrs. Hudson is revealed as the daughter of Prof. Moriarty.

CONS –
1) A great opportunity wasted. One of the most awaited movie in recent times starring the greatest comedic-duo of our times was ruined by caricaturish performances and witless writing.

QUOTE –
Holmes: When one eliminates the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, is the truth.
Watson: But this is absurd. Holmes, you must know in your heart…
Holmes: The heart is for pumping blood. The truth is the truth!

PROS –
1) Mrs. Hudson driving Aston Martin.

CONS –
1) You can’t fool viewers by showing incoherent story-lines, the plot is full of potholes and claim it be a twisted psychological thriller of some sort.
2) This season reduced the iconic detective to a manipulated genius driven by other geniuses beyond his comprehension long before he hit puberty. There was also a hint given that he was brain-washed.

QUOTE –
High Rank Police Officer: Do you have any idea what speed you were going at?
Mrs. Hudson: No, of course not! I was on the phone.

QUOTE –
Roger: But all that just told you he was married. How did you know he’d come to see you about his wife?
Sherlock Holmes: [smiles] Because when you’re a detective, and a man comes to see you, it’s usually about his wife.
