VERDICT – 1/5

PROS –
1) The single continuous 10 minute shot of that car chase scene. It looks straight from a mission from Call Of Duty: Black Ops.

CONS –
1) Saju, Ovi, Neysa – Who is suggesting such weird Indian names to the writer. ?
2) The portrayal of Bangladesh in an extremely bad light as some militia run state. A Black Hawk Down level of city-wide carnage with machine guns, armored vehicles, and helicopters – all for a kid whose gangster father can’t even pay the ransom.
3) Veterans like Pankaj Tripathi is given a blink-and-miss role while Priyanshu Painyuli is playing the crime lord. Huge miscast.

QUOTE –
Asif: Here’s some advice, a gift. Keep your other finger. Because no matter how badass you think you are, there’s always a badass who’s bigger than you.

PROS –

CONS –
1) This is a below-average action movie. This generation is wonderstruck by the likes of John Wick and Jason Bourne. An average vigilante hero in a cliched movie just won’t do.
2) Denzel Washington needs to stop this right now with such adventures before he joins the league of Steven Seagal.

Robert McCall: I’m your father. You mama forgot to tell you about me.

1) An ordinary love triangle elevated by a good screenplay and unique 19th century New Zealand setting.

CONS –

QUOTE –
Ada: At night! I think of my piano in its ocean grave, and sometimes of myself floating above it. Down there everything is so still and silent that it lulls me to sleep. It is a weird lullaby and so it is; it is mine.

VERDICT – 1/5

PROS –
1) Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook, & Bob Hoskins as Smee are the saving grace of this annoyingly childish movie. Captain Hook‘s entrance with Smee witty one-liners is the only well-written scene.
2) Pirate baseball match.

CONS –
1) Over-theatrical acting by most actors. Julia Roberts character as Tinker Bell is excessively irritating in particular. The scenes with Lost Boys are another headache.
2) Tediously formulaic Spielberg family movie.

Peter Banning: Someone give me a hand.
Captain Hook: I already have.

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) The breathtaking stunt by Sean Connery on top of the moving train dodging bridges after bridges. The last 20 minutes of the movie are unmissable.

CONS –
1) The first hour of the heist is engaged in extracting the 4 keys. The third and final act saves this movie.
2) Ridiculous climactic escape.

QUOTE –
Judge: Now, on the matter of motive, we ask you: Why did you conceive, plan, and execute this dastardly and scandalous crime?
Edward Pierce: I wanted the money.

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) A highly fictionalized biography of Mozart showcasing the eternal conflict of talent vs taste.
2) F. Murray Abraham gave an enduring performance as Antonio Salieri. He carried the movie on his shoulders. A jealous and scheming rival, but also the sole true connoisseur of Mozart’s musical genius.
3) Not just the movie got the superb screenplay, even technically the movie is a triumph. The cinematography on Panavision Cameras gives it such a fresh look to the movie that even after three decades the movie doesn’t look dated.
4) The costume, make-up, art direction, and music is first-rate.

CONS –
N/A

QUOTE –
Antonio Salieri: From now on, we are enemies – You and I. Because You choose for Your instrument a boastful, lustful, smutty, infantile boy and give me for reward only the ability to recognize the incarnation. Because You are unjust, unfair, unkind, I will block You, I swear it. I will hinder and harm Your creature as far as I am able. I will ruin Your incarnation.

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) A Disney’s family entertainer. A stunt pilot got in the middle of the FBI, Gangsters, Howard Hughes, and Nazis.
2) Timothy Dalton as the suave Hollywood movie star who is actually a Nazi agent.
3) Good supporting cast.
4) Incredible Art Deco-style poster.

CONS –
1) Billy Campbell as the title character. He got no screen presence. Some other 90s actors like Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, etc would have done better justice to the role.

QUOTE –
Cliff Secord: Where’s your stuntman now, Sinclair?
Neville Sinclair: I do my own stunts!

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A well-made 96 minutes adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s timeless classic novel.
2) Robert Newton gave a remarkable Oscar-worthy performance as the central character of Long John Silver. The grey shaded character whom the audiences will equally despise and adore.
3) The pirate language spoken by Long John Silver is the textbook example of “pirate accent”.

CONS –
N/A

QUOTE –
Long John Silver: Matey!

The Year of Living Dangerously (1982)

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) Linda Hunt as the male dwarf Billy Kwan gave a performance of a lifetime. A female actress winning an Oscar for playing a male character is no small achievement. The romance angle is a sub-plot around Billy playing the central character. His final monologue revealing himself as the master puppeteer is extremely moving.
2) L’enfant by Vangelis.
3) A rare movie featuring turbulent politics of 1960s Indonesia, Sukarno, and 30 September Movement.

CONS –
1) It’s a one-time watch boring romantic-war-drama.

QUOTE –
Billy Kwan: I believed in you. I thought you were a man of light. That’s why I gave you those stories you think are so important. I made you see things. I made you feel something about is right. I gave you my trust. So did Jill. I created you.
