Love, Death & Robots (Season 1)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
MUSIC – 1
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 4/4

PROS –
1) I’ll rate LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS better than Black Mirror and Electric Dreams. The core of any sci-fi story can be explained in a few minutes and we don’t a 90 minutes episode for character development. The short duration of each episode is the biggest asset of the show.
2) Stories from various genres including Sci-Fi, Supernatural, Fantasy, Post-Apocalypse, Absurdism, Cyberpunk, etc.
3) Exceptional animation quality from various studios around the world. Every next episode is a surprise.
4) “Good Hunting” – Exploring the Huli jing mythology in Cyberpunk Hong-Kong
5) “Suits” – Who is the real invader?
6) “Zima Blue” – Absurdist robot.
7) “When the Yogurt Took Over” – A warning for the inevitable economic collapse.
8) Matthew Perryman Jones – Living in the Shadows

CONS –
1) “Sucker of Souls” – a plain storyline
2) “The Witness” – a mind-fuck story told for a zillionth time now.
3) “Helping Hand” – 127 Hrs in space
4) “Fish Night” – Great animation with a mediocre story

CULT – 0

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) A horror folk-tale like The Witch (2015).
2) Scenic mountains and forests with a sense of impending horror. There is a strong body-horror factor.
3) The cinematography is fascinating with little or no dialogues.

CONS –
1) The primary story is plain and simple with little outcome.

QUOTE –
“Of those who don’t carry God in their hearts. The Jews and the heathens. They come in the night and like animals they take you. And then some months later you bear a child.”

Arjun Reddy (2017)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 1
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) The love story of an alpha-male surgeon with major anger management issues. The character of Arjun Reddy is the embodiment of the ultimate Indian male fantasy. Self-destructive characters which come close to this are Radhe Mohan from Tere Naam (2003) and Dev from Dev.D (2009)
2) The primary theme is heavily inspired by Devdas but with more character study.
3) Sumanasa Vandita by Bombay S.Jayashri
4) The realistic approach to the medical profession.

CONS –
1) The third act of the movie is clearly inspired by Flight (2012).
2) 186 minutes of running time. The movie is criminally long. The final hour is stretched to its limit.
3) The happy ending climax goes completely against the built up.

There’s Something About Mary (1998)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A Farrelly brothers’ classic laugh-riot.
2) Out of all the suitors, Matt Dillon character of Pat Healy stands out. He giving Ted a fake description of Mary is the funniest scene in the movie.
3) The hitch-hiker with Ted talking about 7-Minute Abs. Ted’s scene at the police station is another gem.
4) Pat trying to revive Pufferball with CPR and electric shocks.

CONS –
1) Bollywood ruined this classic, for the uninitiated, with Deewane Huye Paagal (2005)

QUOTE –
Pat: Was Mary a little big-boned back in high school?
Ted: Big-boned? No, no, not at all. No.
Pat: I guess she packed on a few pounds over the years.
Ted: Oh, yeah? So she’s a little…? She’s a little chubby?
Pat: I’d say about a deuce, deuce and a half. Not bad.
Ted: My. A deuce and a half. Huh?
Pat: Well, you know, you shit out a bunch of kids…and you’re bound to put on a few pounds.
Ted: So she’s…? She’s married?
Pat: No, no, she’s never been. That’s the good news. Four kids. Three different guys. but no rock.Hyperactive little fuckers too. Tough to keep up with in a wheelchair, I bet.
Ted: She’s in a wheelchair? Mary’s in a wheelchair?
Pat: I thought that was part of your kick.

Navajo Joe (1966)

STORY – 0
DIRECTOR – 1

MUSIC – 1
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) Ennio Morricone’s exceptional soundtrack. A special thanks to Quentin Tarantino for introducing this generation to gems like “A Silhouette Of Doom”, “Main Title (Navajo Joe)”, “The Confrontation/The Return of Joe”
2) Final axe throw scene by Joe killing Duncan.

CONS –
1) Mediocre cast. Even Burt Reynolds as Navajo Joe is not impressive.
2) Cliched western plot but without the essence of strong revenge.

QUOTE –
Sheriff Elmo Reagan: Only ones elected in this country are Americans.
Joe: My father was born here, in the mountains. His father before him and his father before him and his father before him. Where was your father born?
Sheriff Elmo Reagan: Ulp, what’s that to do with it?
Joe: I said, where was he born?
Sheriff Elmo Reagan: Uuh, in Scotland.
Joe: My father was born here, in America. His father before him and his father before him and his father before him. Now which of us is American?

Murder Mystery (2019)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 0

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) An Agatha Christie kind of pan-European whodunit murder-mystery with a diverse list of suspects. Instead of Hercule Poirot, it’s the bumbling couple of Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.

CONS –
1) One time watch.
2) A better supporting cast would’ve been nice.

QUOTE –
Charles Cavendish: That is the Quince dagger. Chinese steel, jewels from across the Orient. A gift to the family from Marco Polo. Or so the legend says.
Audrey Spitz: God. Nick’s grandmother gave us a toaster from Sears. Or so the legend says.

Batman vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2019)

VERDICT – 2/4

PROS –
1) Batman vs Shredder opening fist fight.
2) Bane ended up breaking his knee trying to do a “Batman: Knightfall” on Donatello.
3) End credits-roll with all Batman/TMNT crossover comic-book covers.

CONS –
1) Suitable only for younger audiences.

QUOTE –
Joker: Better listen to the bat, turtle boy. Take it from me. One reptile to another.
