VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) The transformation of Adam McKay from a full-fledged comedy director to political black comedy is remarkable.
2) The false end credits in the middle of the movie. It can’t get more audacious than that.
3) Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney gave her best performance to date.

CONS –
1) While the movie is indeed informative, it’s trivializing and simplifying history at the same time.

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016)

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) Well-made biopic of an underdog. Real-life footage of matches with CGI adds great authenticity to the entire experience.
2) Herry Tangri as Yuvraj Singh. This actor is a spitting image of young Yuvraj.

CONS –
1) Generic elements of a sports biopic. I wonder how many times Anupam Kher will play the perennial role of a father asking his kids to quit sports.
2) Forgettable soundtrack

Green Book (2018)

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) An Italian bouncer with a huge appetite employed by an uptight gay negro pianist in 1960s United States for a musical concert tour.
2) From the director of one of the funniest road-movie Dumb and Dumber (1994) comes another heartful road-movie addressing racism.
3) The allegation of this movie being a “white savior” movie is absurd. If this is a “white savior” movie, The Intouchables (2011) should be regarded as a “black savior” movie. The themes are strikingly similar.
4) Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali both deserved Oscars for their roles. Viggo’s physical transformation was unbelievable.

CONS –
1) Music of a biopic about a musician could’ve much better.

QUOTE –
Tony Lip: You know, Doc, something’s been eatin’ at me this whole trip.
Dr. Don Shirley: Hmm?
Tony Lip: That Titsburgh was a major disappointment. I didn’t notice any difference at all.

Wild Wild Country (Mini-Series)

STORY – 1

CULT – 1

VERDICT – 4/4

PROS –
1) Osho owes his empire in Oregon to Ma Anand Sheela. The foul-mouthed no-nonsense boss bitch is possibly the most under-rated Gujarati of all time. One can wonder what she’d have done as a politician or as a businesswoman.
2) Building Rajneeshpuram: A Shangri La destined to doom. The disillusioned architects of this paradise were as corrupt as anyone outside. In the hindsight, it’s fascinating how Osho was talking about “deprogramming” USA while hiding behind the same US constitution.
3) Muddy Ranch to Antelope to Wasco County – A new “Mayflower” community within the USA. A perfect case study to understand how US voting laws can be misused.
4) One of the most gripping and binge-worthy Netflix documentary series.Kudos to Netflix for producing this long-overdue documentary about the cult of a dopehead sex maniac conman called Osho and his overly possessive secretary Ma Anand Sheela.
5) Great soundtrack: Void Vision – Sour

CONS –
N/A

QUOTE
Ma Anand Sheela: Rajneeshpuram is a big living opera.Sheela a soprano.Bhagwan a tenor.Rajneeshpuram the setting. Operas are, at the end, always tragic. But there were so many facets, so many dimensions in this opera.I would like to say, “People of Oregon…think yourselves lucky that this opera came your way.”

Verdict – 0/5

Pros –
1) Sanjay Dutt’s real-life still remains more colorful than this dull movie

Cons –
1) Hirani can make Gandhi out of Goebbels. This is white-washing and image makeover of cringeworthy propaganda level.
2) The entire movie insults the intelligence of the audiences in broad-daylight by ridiculously dumbing-down documented history and adding fictional characters in a so-called biopic.
3) Forgettable soundtrack.

A Futile and Stupid Gesture (2018)

STORY – 0
DIRECTOR – 0
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 0

Verdict – 1/5

Pros –
1) Will Forte as Doug Kenney – The Wolf Of Lampoon Street.

Cons –
1) A futile attempt to recreate the magic of Man On The Moon but David Wain is no Miloš Forman
2) Too many characters, too little time.
3) This biopic follows the same rise and fall formula as used in Goodfellas, Scarface and The Wolf Of Wall Street.

Quote –
Tom Snyder: Mr. Kenney, it’s a fine line between being clever and offensive, isn’t it?
Douglas Kenney: Look, if I could just say something in defense of National Lampoon for one moment…
Tom Snyder: Please.
Douglas Kenney: We come from a tradition of truth-tellers. A long time ago, there was someone else society found offensive. They thought that what he did was radical – dangerous. They persecuted him… and eventually killed him. Of course, I’m referring to Dracula.

VERDICT – 2/4

PROS –
1) Story of one of the greatest king-maker in the modern-day USA. A must watch for a political science student.
2) The step by step timeline run up the 2016 campaign.
3) Stone’s rules

CONS –
1) Plane narrative. No juicy event-montage with a classic number in the background.
