Three Identical Strangers (2018)

VERDICT – 3/4

PROS –
1) A monumental scientific experiment of nature vs nurture. The real answers can be given only either by Peter B. Neubauer or the sealed records in Yale University after 2065.
2) This is some scary The Boys from Brazil (1978) stuff.

QUOTE –
Natasha Josefowitz: People don’t like to hear, they say, “I have free will.” We would prefer that we have some influence over our lives. Wouldn’t you rather know that’? That you have some control over this and so finding out, never mind, doesn’t matter what you do. So, I think it’s upsetting to people to see how little influence they have, how little control they have. We don’t like that, we fight that.

Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee (2016)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 0

VERDICT – 2/4

PROS –
1) John McAfee is as important figure in silicon valley as Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. The documentary provides great insight into the bizarre private life of this eccentric-genius-millionaire.

CONS –
1) A documentary too good to be 100% true. While the life of John McAfee is indeed full of upheavals, the claims made by people against him in this documentary sounds too dubious and biased. The entire plot sounds like a shoddy Hollywood story.

Fyre Fraud (2019)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 0

VERDICT – 2/4

PROS –
1) Ultimate millennials meltdown. Rich spoiled attention-seeking millennials cheated in broad daylight by their favorite medium – the social media. This Instagram armageddon is the exemplary example of blind consumerism in the era of so-called “social media influencers”.
2) Billy McFarland’s FYRE festival was a scam from the word go. The shocking thing is how the super investigative western media played along Billy and promoted this shitstorm without an iota of scrutiny.

CONS –
1) This documentary documents Billy’s history and the events run-up to the disastrous festival but not the actual chaos on the Bahamian island. Very little time is given to actual festival attendees.

VERDICT – 0/5

PROS –
1) A short chapter of history

CONS –
1) A ridiculous attempt to trivialize history by portraying all the Christians as cruel attackers provoked by the Pope and the Muslims rulers as merciful and kind.
3) 53 minutes of cringe-worthy political correctness with made-up words like “dehumanization”

QUOTE
Bloodshed and war didn’t end with the Sultan and Saint Francis Angry dehumanizing words spark violence today as before.

VERDICT – 4/4

PROS –
1) Osho owes his empire in Oregon to Ma Anand Sheela. The foul-mouthed no-nonsense boss bitch is possibly the most under-rated Gujarati of all time. One can wonder what she’d have done as a politician or as a businesswoman.
2) Building Rajneeshpuram: A Shangri La destined to doom. The disillusioned architects of this paradise were as corrupt as anyone outside. In the hindsight, it’s fascinating how Osho was talking about “deprogramming” USA while hiding behind the same US constitution.
3) Muddy Ranch to Antelope to Wasco County – A new “Mayflower” community within the USA. A perfect case study to understand how US voting laws can be misused.
4) One of the most gripping and binge-worthy Netflix documentary series.Kudos to Netflix for producing this long-overdue documentary about the cult of a dopehead sex maniac conman called Osho and his overly possessive secretary Ma Anand Sheela.
5) Great soundtrack: Void Vision – Sour

CONS –

QUOTE
Ma Anand Sheela: Rajneeshpuram is a big living opera.Sheela a soprano.Bhagwan a tenor.Rajneeshpuram the setting. Operas are, at the end, always tragic. But there were so many facets, so many dimensions in this opera.I would like to say, “People of Oregon…think yourselves lucky that this opera came your way.”

PROS –
1) Marc Tyler Nobleman quest for the justice for the man who created possibly the greatest comic character of all time. A documentary 10 years in the making.
2) The motion comic effect used gives the documentary astounding authenticity.
3) The fulfilling climactic scene from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) where Bill Finger got his due credit.

CONS –

QUOTE –
“There are so many fans who clamber for justice for the creators. I think in the end it takes more than this amorphous mass of fans. There has to be one person who steps up and leads the charge.”

PROS –
1) The horrors of War in those trenches. Definitive First World War documentary.
2) This documentary is a triumph, an homage to the greatest generation of Britain. A story much needed to be told.
3) Initial 25 minutes in Black&White, snapping to colour the moment the troops landed the battlefields and switching back to Black&White once the war ends.
4) The intense close combat sequence narrated by soldiers with the first-hand experience through “The War Illustrated” magazine.
5) End credits: “Mademoiselle from Armentières”

“The only thing that really did annoy me was, when I went back to work after I’d got demobilised, I went down the stores, and the bloke behind the counter was a bloke who I knew. He said, “Where have you been ? On nights ?”
