VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) Entire Bernie Mac’s campaign for the vice-president is the best part of this movie. The NATO bit was top notch.

CONS –
1) Terrible execution. It’s a 5-minutes worth of stand-up comedy act stretched for 95 minutes with little consequences.
2) Disappointing soundtrack.

QUOTE –
Host: What about NATO?
Mitch: I never met Nato. I don’t talk about people behind their back.
Host: NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Mitch: I thought you were talking about this guy named Nato.
Host: But you have to know these things. You’re running for public office.
Mitch: Do you know Nato Jacobs? Do you know Nato Jacobs?
Host: I’m sorry, I haven’t met the gentleman.
Mitch: That’s what I said. You know nothing about Nato? I know nothing about NATO.

True Detective (Season 1)

CULT – 1

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) A must watch detective crime thriller of epic proportion with 17 years of non-linear storyline. It’s HBO’s reply to Memories of Murder (2003).
2) Matthew McConaughey as Detective Cohle gave a great performance of a sociopathic cop.
3) Opening song: “Far from Any Road”
4) Unapologetically good ol’ misogynist show with a high level of testosterone.
5) The climactic fulfilling scene between Rust & Marty

VERDICT – 0/5

PROS –

CONS –
1) It’s a carbon copy of the original with nothing new to offer. Completely avoidable.
2) The “photorealistic” version is, by all standards, inferior to the original.

Three Identical Strangers (2018)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 3/4

PROS –
1) A monumental scientific experiment of nature vs nurture. The real answers can be given only either by Peter B. Neubauer or the sealed records in Yale University after 2065.
2) This is some scary The Boys from Brazil (1978) stuff.

CONS –
N/A

QUOTE –
Natasha Josefowitz: People don’t like to hear, they say, “I have free will.” We would prefer that we have some influence over our lives. Wouldn’t you rather know that’? That you have some control over this and so finding out, never mind, doesn’t matter what you do. So, I think it’s upsetting to people to see how little influence they have, how little control they have. We don’t like that, we fight that.

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) The only bearable scenes of the movie are between O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Seth Rogen.
2) Andy Serkis as Parker Wembley – unrecognizable in that makeup.

CONS –
1) While the complete movie was already ruined in the trailer, I decided to watch it anyway for the sake of Seth Rogen but the movie is a big bag of disappointment.

Fred Flarsky: I’m a racist, you’re a Republican, I don’t know what the fuck’s going on.

War & Peace (2016 Miniseries)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 1
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) A grand adaptation of a grand novel. Leo Tolstoy’s masterpiece with a classic happy ending. Primary themes of this classic include love triangles, forgiveness, sacrificing love for family, spirituality, the cycle of karma, etc.
2) Great casting including Jim Broadbent, Brian Cox, Paul Dano, etc.
3) A story is as good as it’s the main villain. This grand story’s grand villain is none other than Napoleon Bonaparte.
4) Rated-R war scenes
5) Andrei and Natasha love story
6) Some of the most fascinating characters of this story are the mild-mannered generous Count Ilya Rostov, and the villain-turned-hero Fedor Dolokhov.

CONS –

QUOTE –
Pierre Bezukhov: They say sufferings are misfortunes. But if I was asked, would I stay as I was before I was taken prisoner, or go through it all again? I would say for God’s sake, let me be a prisoner again.

The Driver (1978)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A definitive cult movie by Walter Hill.  The godfather of all modern car-racing games and numerous Hollywood heist movies like Driver (2011), Baby Driver (2017), etc.
2) All the characters are nameless. That’s how brave the director is.
3) High octane car chase scenes
4) Every major and minor character seems the central character of the movie including the Exchange Man.

CONS –
1) A kickass soundtrack is missing. What a shame!

QUOTE –
The Detective: I respect a man that’s good at what he does. I’ll tell you something, I’m very good at what I do.
