Ripley’s Game (2002)

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) Considering this movie as a sequel to The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), we have a Tom Ripley who is no longer a guilt-ridden murderer but a refined and cold-blooded assassin straight out of a John le Carré’s novel.
2) John Malkovich gave justice to the character of a remorseless Tom Ripley.

CONS –
1) This plot is more about a dying man dragged by Ripley in the game of assassins.

QUOTE –
Tom Ripley: I’m a creation. A gifted improviser. I lack your conscience and when I was young that troubled me. It no longer does. I don’t worry about being caught because I don’t believe anyone is watching. The world is not a poorer place because those people are dead. It’s one less car on the road. It’s a little less noise and menace. You were brave today. You put some money away for your family. That’s all.

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A heartfelt story of an old diligent workaholic butler making a last attempt to revive his unfinished and repressed love story.
2) The World War II / Nazi backdrop is only a ruse in this poignant love story of two duty-bound people.
3) Anthony Hopkins’s performance is Oscar-worthy. His stone face reactions as the duty-bound butler concealing his emotions even during the death of his father, or him refusing to answer any auxiliary question to his master’s guests deserve special mention. He was acting through his eyes.
4) The final goodbye in the rain is one heart-rending scene

Stevens: In my philosophy, Mr. Benn, a man cannot call himself well-contented until he has done all he can to be of service to his employer. Of course, this assumes that one’s employer is a superior person, not only in rank, or wealth, but in moral stature.

PROS –
1) Matt Smith as Parson Collins gave suffiecient comic relief.

CONS –
1) A preposterous and futile attempt to amalgamate Jane Austen’s classic with zombie fiction.
2) Mediocre fight and action scenes.
3) We already have definitive versions of the story with the 1995 BBC TV Series and Joe Wright’s 2005 movie. This movie was supposed to put more weight on the zombie plot but the love story dominated the plot.

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) Cleganebowl. Sandor Clegane will go down as the most remembered character of the series.
2) A moment of appreciation for Peter Dinklage playing Tyrion Lannister.
3) Beric Dondarrion dying to save Arya, Jorah Mormont dying to save Dany. Theon dying to save Bran.
4) Lyanna Mormont‘s giant-killing act.

CONS –
1) A rushed final season. A series which could’ve been the greatest series of all time choked during the final season.
2) “The Long Night”. The grand battle ruined thanks to bad cinematography, which included a lame death scene of the grand-villain.
3) All the fan theories, all the wild guesses about the Azor Ahai, etc. were whimpered down by this unfulfilling season full of bad writing.

Verdict – 2/5

Pros –
1) Intriguing dystopian plot. A near future where crime is legal for a day.
2) Decent background score

Cons –
1) The direction is awful. No proper character development. Neither horror nor slasher.
2) The right story was not picked to start the series. The national insanity was reduced to a house-break-in.

1) Olenna’s badass confession.
2) Bronn almost killing Drogon.

Cons –

1) Way too fast as compared to past 6 seasons.
2) Too many online theories corrupted the show for us.We are ourselves to blame.
3) Unnecessary obligatory sex-scenes

QUOTE –
Tyrion Lannister: I’m guilty of being a dwarf. Oh, yes I am. I’ve been on trial for that my entire life. I did not kill Joffery, but I wish that I had! Watching your vicious bastard die gave me more relief than a thousand lying whores! I wish I was the monster you think I am! I wish I had enough poison for the whole pack of you! I would gladly give my life to watch you all swallow it! I will not give my life for Joffery’s murder and I know I’ll get no justice here, so I will let the gods decide my fate. I demand a trial by combat!

PROS –
1) Mega-City One : The city itself is a central character of the premise.
2) Lena Headey as Madeline “Ma-Ma” Madrigal –  the scar-faced patron of Peach Trees tower block.
3) One day operation story & no time waste on character introduction.
4) This movie can be said as the Godchild of “Escape From NY“. Got an uncanny John Carpenter touch.
5) The Vulcan cannons battle on the 76th floor.

QUOTE –
Judge Dredd: America is an irradiated wasteland. Within it lies a city. Outside the boundary walls, a desert. A cursed earth. Inside the walls, a cursed city, stretching from Boston to Washington D.C. An unbroken concrete landscape. 800 million people living in the ruin of the old world and the mega structures of the new one. Mega blocks. Mega highways. Mega-City One. Convulsing. Choking. Breaking under its own weight. Citizens in fear of the street. The gun. The gang. Only one thing fighting for order in the chaos: the men and women of the Hall of Justice. Juries. Executioners. Judges.
