VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) The Harry Potter saga took a grim turn after the death of Cedric Diggory. The movie follows the turmoil at Hogwarts where Dumbledore acknowledges the return of Voldemort, while the Ministry of Magic is reluctant to believe it.
2) Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge gave an everlasting performance as the new boss bitch of Hogwarts with an irritating smug on her face.
3) Death of a major character (Sirius Black); Lucius Malfoy is finally exposed & sent to Azkaban; the film ends with a kick-ass boss fight between Lord Voldemort & Albus Dumbledore.
4) “The Ministry Of Magic” with a sample of “One Day More” from Les Misérables.

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) The love-life of 2 sisters’ devastated by their respective love interests. One man who kept his promise and the other who failed. It’s fascinating to see how much the modern-day rom-coms are influenced by Jane Austen’s classic novels.
2) A huge round of applause for Ang Lee & Emma Thompson for such a delightful adaptation of the classic novel. Emma’s performance was equally gracious.
3) Such a great ensemble of actors. The stoic performances of Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson stand out.

Marianne: Always resignation and acceptance. Always prudence and honour and duty. Elinor, where is your heart?
Elinor Dashwood: What do you know of my heart? What do you know of anything but your own suffering. For weeks, Marianne, I’ve had this pressing on me without being at liberty to speak of it to a single creature. It was forced on me by the very person whose prior claims ruined all my hope. I have endured her exultations again and again whilst knowing myself to be divided from Edward forever. Believe me, Marianne, had I not been bound to silence I could have provided proof enough of a broken heart, even for you.

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) A petty thief and vagrant is imprisoned for crimes he didn’t commit. It took him his father’s death to gather strength to fight for his own justice. An intense prison-drama cum court-room drama.
2) While Daniel Day-Lewis plays the lead character, the most praiseworthy performance is from Pete Postlethwaite as the helpless father and wrongfully accused man keeping his faith in justice until his last breath. His scenes with Daniel Day-Lewis in particular are well-written and performed.
3) The immense presence of Don Baker as Joe. A small role but equally profound screen presence.
4) Opening Credits: Bono and Gavin Friday – In the Name of the Father“.

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A heartfelt story of an old diligent workaholic butler making a last attempt to revive his unfinished and repressed love story.
2) The World War II / Nazi backdrop is only a ruse in this poignant love story of two duty-bound people.
3) Anthony Hopkins’s performance is Oscar-worthy. His stone face reactions as the duty-bound butler concealing his emotions even during the death of his father, or him refusing to answer any auxiliary question to his master’s guests deserve special mention. He was acting through his eyes.
4) The final goodbye in the rain is one heart-rending scene

PROS –
1) Emma Thompson as Katherine Newbury is the only saving grace of this one time watch.

CONS –
1) The Devil Wears Prada (2006) revisited.
2) I would not even try to explore the socio-political message hidden in the plot of this average movie.

Verdict – 4/5

Pros –

1) Will Ferrell as Harold Crick
2) Great Supporting cast ( Maggie Gyllenhaal/Emma Thompson/Dustin Hoffman)
3) “I brought you flours” – One of the best cult romantic scene
4) Romance angle is the highlight of the film and sadly the least worked upon part.
5) “Whole Wide World” – Wreckless Eric

Cons –

1) What genre is this ? Sci-Fi ? Fantasy ?
2) Solid start but as the movie progresses the storyline goes on without any message and purpose.
