VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) In a dystopian Australia, Max Rockatansky is a top pursuit man of highway patrol unit. The roads are terrorized by a crazy biker gang led by their psychopathic leader called Toecutter. Max took matters in his own hands after his family is attacked by the gang.
2) The violence and gore level is astonishing for a 1979 movie. An instant cult for that generation.
3) High octane chase and crash sequences.

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) A scrap experimental combat robot capable of self-repair comes back to life and goes on a violent rampage in an apartment
2) “The Order Of Death”
3) A post-apocalyptic plot with Cassette Futurism set-up and synthwave soundtrack. The RJ Angry Bob on radio gives great dystopian insight.

CONS –
1) Most of the movie is inside an apartment with dark lighting. The entire M.A.R.K. 13 cyborg is a Terminator rip-off.

Angry Bob: This is Angry Bob, the man with the industrial dick, coming to you loud and clear on W.A.R. Radio with the good news and the bad news. Bad news is the heatwave’s not going to let up. It’s expected to hit ninety downtown before nightfall, although weather control keeps promising that rain is on the way. The foul up on the launch pad at terminal eight doesn’t look like it’s gonna clear for another half hour and holiday air traffic is still stacking up over the CBD and all outlying districts. But traffic control promises that if you all keep cool they’ll get you home in time for Christmas. As for the good news – There is no fucking good news! So let’s just play some music!

The Purge: Anarchy (2014)

CULT – 0

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) The annual Purge returns with a new set of hunters and victims. It’s definitely better than The Purge (2013).
2) There are some realistic addition to the dystopian Purge like the upper-class wealthy Purgers bidding for human hunting, and the anti-purge resistance group. The primary concept created by James DeMonaco is so fascinating that its almost equivalent to Orwell’s 1984. Unfortunately, this franchise awaits a good plot with a good cast.

CONS –
1) The cast is relatively unknown. Not a single A-List actor.

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A dystopian Detroit city where a big corporation called OCP is running the police department.
2) Great CGI and ultra-violent action (thanks to bullet squibs).
3) Future tech gun: Cobra Assault Cannon
4) The fake news broadcasts throughout the movie reporting crimes, unemployment, space tech, and commercials selling weird products make the entire set-up more fascinating.

VERDICT – 1/5

PROS –
1) Stoya as Nimani

CONS –
1) Average AI futuristic movie with forced dystopian undertones of socialism without any consequences. A classic exhibition of style over substance.
2) Lazar Bodrosa is clearly heavily inspired by the visual theme of Blade Runner (1982). An average episode of Black Mirror or Electric Dreams is far better than this 85 minutes long abomination.

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) High production value and grand set designs.
2) The intriguing primary concept of a post-apocalyptic dystopian colony run by computers.
3) Michael Bay’s The Island (2005) borrowed heavily from this film.
4) Box, the robot. This fusion of C-3PO & R2-D2 is no cute android.
5) Jenny Agutter as Jessica 6 – one breathtaking femme fatale.

CONS –
1) Disappointingly trashy CGI for a 1976 movie.
2) For what purpose the computers were breeding humans in 2274 AD? What caused the apocalypse? Some questions are never answered.

Verdict – 4/5

Pros –
1) Some great action sequences at Klendathu, the Arachnids’ home planet especially the scene where Rico fights a tanker bug.
2) Average main actors but good character development – this movie is like a Rated-R plot in the Star Trek universe with great CGI. The movie itself is set in a weird dystopian future where a fascist government is running propaganda videos 24/7.
3) Even with a 100+ million budget, the movie got a weird low production cost appearance like an 80s space movie which is actually giving it the cult status.
4) The audiences will have no sympathy for the main villains – the bugs.

Verdict – 1/5

Pros –
1) Michael Shannon as Captain Beatty in this bibliophile’s dystopian nightmare

Cons –
1) Adaptation of this Ray Bradbury’s magnum opus was never easy. It’s the most influential dystopian novel after 1984 and Brave New World. But if we just talk about this movie adaptation, beneath all the sci-fi tech glitter, it’s worse than any Black Mirror episode.
2) Apart from Michael Shannon, the rest cast is stale.

The Purge (2013)

CULT – 1

Verdict – 2/5

Pros –
1) Intriguing dystopian plot. A near future where crime is legal for a day.
2) Decent background score

Cons –
1) The direction is awful. No proper character development. Neither horror nor slasher.
2) The right story was not picked to start the series. The national insanity was reduced to a house-break-in.
