VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) The cat and mouse game between an FBI agent and a young talented con-man in the 1960s.
2) Christopher Walken as Frank Abagnale Sr. gave an extremely touching performance of a heartbroken person who wasn’t able to recover from the shock of losing his home and family after encountering tax problems with the IRS.
3) There is Steven Spielberg charm all over the screenplay which makes even a con-man an adorable character.
4) One of the most memorable Leonardo DiCaprio roles.

CONS –

QUOTE –
Frank Abagnale Sr.: Two little mice fell in a bucket of cream. The first mouse quickly gave up and drowned. The second mouse, wouldn’t quit. He struggled so hard that eventually he churned that cream into butter and crawled out. Gentlemen, as of this moment, I am that second mouse.

VERDICT – 1/5

PROS –
1) Some good naval battle sequences wrapped up in 91-minutes running time.

CONS –
1) For a generation who grew up on submarine films like Das Boot (1981), The Hunt for Red October (1990), U-571 (2000), etc., this movie is quite redundant and completely avoidable. The bombardment of nautical jargon and navy battle lingo is not helping either.
2) Tom Hanks gave another formulaic performance which is not his mistake though. He’s a seriously typecasted in such roles now.

VERDICT – 3/4

PROS –
1) Adventure of toys who pretend to be lifeless in the presence of humans. Disney struck the gold-mine with this story.
2) Great characters and great voice-actors.
3) Final rescue adventure with the rocket.

CONS –
1) Computer-animated movies cannot match traditionally animated movies. Even by 1995 standard, the 3-D animation is poor.

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) Barkhad Abdi as Abduwali Muse – born to play this role.

CONS –
1) A story worth a Nat Geo documentary, not a feature-length movie
2) 45 minutes too long.
3) Walk in the park role for Tom Hanks. His acting is getting more & more annoying and pretentious.

2) Trivializing the history

Quote –
Charlie Wilson: What is the U.S. strategy?
Gust Avrakotos: Well, strictly speaking, we don’t have one. But we’re working hard on that.
Charlie Wilson: Who’s ‘we’?
Gust Avrakotos: Me and three other guys.

Bridge of Spies (2015)

VERDICT – 1/5

PROS –
1) An insurance lawyer sent to Berlin to negotiate with the Soviet Union to release a U.S. Air Force pilot in exchange for a Soviet KGB spy. The story from Coen Brothers sounds promising but there not much meat onto it.
2) Janusz Kamiński’s cinematography with some good wide-angle shots is the only saving grace for this movie.
3) The final scene at the Glienicke Bridge.

CONS –
1) Predictable twist and thrills. Anyone interested should watch the 2 minutes trailer and save himself from the ordeal.
2) This movie is a definitive Steven Spielberg’s Oscar bait with Tom Hanks. Another run-of-the-mill period drama.
3) Weak supporting cast. Even Mark Rylance’s performance as Rudolf Abel is overrated.
4) Tediously long with 141 minutes running time.

QUOTE –
The Godfather is the I Ching. The Godfather is the sum of all wisdom. The Godfather is the answer to any question. What should I pack for my summer vacation? ‘Leave the gun, take the cannoli.’ What day of the week is it? ‘Maunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Wednesday.’ And the answer to your question is ‘Go to the mattresses.’ You’re at war. ‘It’s not personal, it’s business. It’s not personal it’s business.’ Recite that to yourself every time you feel you’re losing your nerve. I know you worry about being brave, this is your chance. Fight. Fight to the death.
