VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) The cat and mouse game between an FBI agent and a young talented con-man in the 1960s.
2) Christopher Walken as Frank Abagnale Sr. gave an extremely touching performance of a heartbroken person who wasn’t able to recover from the shock of losing his home and family after encountering tax problems with the IRS.
3) There is Steven Spielberg charm all over the screenplay which makes even a con-man an adorable character.
4) One of the most memorable Leonardo DiCaprio roles.

CONS –

QUOTE –
Frank Abagnale Sr.: Two little mice fell in a bucket of cream. The first mouse quickly gave up and drowned. The second mouse, wouldn’t quit. He struggled so hard that eventually he churned that cream into butter and crawled out. Gentlemen, as of this moment, I am that second mouse.

The Goonies (1985)

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) Pirate treasure, a secret map, a lost ship of a one-eyed dead pirate, booby traps, a “Ma Barker” kind of criminal gang and a group of mischievous kids hell-bent for an adventure. An ultimate adventure movie written by Steven Spielberg.
2) The delightful & memorable cast of young actors.

CONS –
1) No doubt the movie is influential but it targets a certain age group. This movie is supposed to be watched at a certain age.

QUOTE –
Andy: I can’t tell… if it’s an “A sharp” or if it’s a “B flat”!
Mikey: Heh, if you hit the wrong note, we’ll all “B flat!”

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) It’s one nail-biting thriller that will keep the audiences on the edge of their seats.
2) That rusted gigantic truck is an intimidating walking piece of horror. It’ll give chills to audiences every time it reappears on the screen.
3) The unseen truck driver makes it scarier. It appears as if some supernatural force is behind the wheels.

“Columbo” Murder by the Book (TV Episode 1971)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 0

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) The story started with the execution of the crime. The entire plot was unraveled from the very beginning to the audiences. The element is how Columbo catches the murderer.
2) The birth of a clumsy and persistent homicide detective.
3) Jack Cassidy playing the suave perpetrator.
4) Barbara Colby as the nervous blackmailer.

CONS –
N/A

QUOTE –
Lieutenant Columbo: Suddenly I thought of something. How clever that first murder was. The phone gimmick, working late in the office – brilliant.
Ken Franklin: Are you awarding gold medals today?
Lieutenant Columbo: Yes. For the first one. Not for the second one. That was sloppy. Mrs. Melville, she’d have been very disappointed.

Hook (1991)

VERDICT – 1/5

PROS –
1) Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook, & Bob Hoskins as Smee are the saving grace of this annoyingly childish movie. Captain Hook‘s entrance with Smee witty one-liners is the only well-written scene.
2) Pirate baseball match.

CONS –
1) Over-theatrical acting by most actors. Julia Roberts character as Tinker Bell is excessively irritating in particular. The scenes with Lost Boys are another headache.
2) Tediously formulaic Spielberg family movie.

Peter Banning: Someone give me a hand.
Captain Hook: I already have.

Ready Player One (2018)

CULT – 1

Verdict – 2/5

PROS –
1) Behind the neon lights, pop-culture references, and future gaming – this is a Huxley’s nightmare. A dystopian movie with dark undertones.
2) Prominent tributes include Back To The Future, a revisit to “Hotel Overlook” and Iron Giant returning for one more sacrifice.
3) I-R0k – Best character from the movie.

CONS –
1) Over-stretched and mediocre 3rd act.
2) Spielberg chooses another cliched plot to direct. This movie reminds us again that Hollywood has milked the 80s enough. No doubt the 80s was the most important decade for the technological advancements which we have today but now there’s clearly an over-kill.

VERDICT – 1/5

PROS –
1) An insurance lawyer sent to Berlin to negotiate with the Soviet Union to release a U.S. Air Force pilot in exchange for a Soviet KGB spy. The story from Coen Brothers sounds promising but there not much meat onto it.
2) Janusz Kamiński’s cinematography with some good wide-angle shots is the only saving grace for this movie.
3) The final scene at the Glienicke Bridge.

CONS –
1) Predictable twist and thrills. Anyone interested should watch the 2 minutes trailer and save himself from the ordeal.
2) This movie is a definitive Steven Spielberg’s Oscar bait with Tom Hanks. Another run-of-the-mill period drama.
3) Weak supporting cast. Even Mark Rylance’s performance as Rudolf Abel is overrated.
4) Tediously long with 141 minutes running time.
