VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) A young boy is captured by a modern-day witch, and the witch is planning to cook him for the dinner party. To stall her plan, the boy tells her three horror stories.
2) Cat from Hell – A hitman hired by a wealthy man to kill a cat. While the story is mediocre, the entire sequence where the cat kills the hitman by forcing itself down his throat and into his stomach was horrifying.
3) Lover’s Vow – A folklore sort of story where a demon spares a man’s life when he swears never to reveal what he saw or describe its appearance to anyone. The final scene where Carola begins transforming back into the monster is an achievement for the special effect team. The scene rivals the transformation scene from An American Werewolf in London (1981).

CONS –
1) Lot 249 – Michael McDowell failed to give justice to Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic horror short story. Even with a good star-cast, the screenplay and execution is childish. The iconic story deserves a full-length movie.

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) An inexperienced man is made the president of a company as part of a stock scam.
2) The fictional invention of the “hula hoop” is the central element of the plot.
3) A comedy movie with caricaturish stock characters. The dystopian mailroom of Hudsucker Industries was surreal.

CONS –
1) The climactic fantasy element of freezing time by stopping the giant clock was baffling. The supernatural element doesn’t fit with the movie.

PROS –

CONS –
1) The story of a 24-yrs old unemployed pothead and wannabe tattoo artist. This semi-biographical Pete Davidson movie is as hopeless and unfunny as it can be. A movie without Team Apatow is not a Judd Apatow movie.
2) The last good movie directed by Judd Apatow was Funny People (2009). He should concentrate more on producing movies rather than directing them.
3) Pete Davidson is not a good actor. Him being the central character doesn’t make any sense. It appears Apatow made this movie for him out of pity to prevent him from committing suicide.

PROS –
1) A quintessential 90s high octane stylish entertainer, full of memorable characters. Simon West clearly watched a lot of John Woo movie before making his debut film.
2) Funny and action-packed from the first minute to the last.
3) John Malkovich as Cyrus “The Virus”. The primary antagonist who makes the movie more watchable.
4) The action-filled climax destroying almost half of Las Vegas.

CONS –

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A light-hearted fantasy black-comedy with a great central concept of God.
2) Great casting. Daniel Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi delivered as expected. Karan Soni as Sanjay is clearly the winner of this series. Dopinder was no fluke, Soni is currently the best actor of Indian-origin in Hollywood.
3) The opening sequence with a new version “The Ecstasy of Gold” by Ennio Morricone.
4) The concept of God’s parents and he being the runt-of-the-litter.

The Death of Stalin (2017)

CULT – 1

Verdict – 4/5

Pros –
1) Text-book example of a good political black comedy. One of the best black comedy I’ve watched since Dr. Strangelove
2) Seasoned actors with witty one-liners
3) When you’re watching a good comedy, it hardly matters if it is historically correct
4) Slow-motion introduction of all major characters
5) Simon Russell Beale as Lavrentiy Beria: A significant historical character who almost led the Soviet Union after Stalin.
