VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) A young boy is captured by a modern-day witch, and the witch is planning to cook him for the dinner party. To stall her plan, the boy tells her three horror stories.
2) Cat from Hell – A hitman hired by a wealthy man to kill a cat. While the story is mediocre, the entire sequence where the cat kills the hitman by forcing itself down his throat and into his stomach was horrifying.
3) Lover’s Vow – A folklore sort of story where a demon spares a man’s life when he swears never to reveal what he saw or describe its appearance to anyone. The final scene where Carola begins transforming back into the monster is an achievement for the special effect team. The scene rivals the transformation scene from An American Werewolf in London (1981).

CONS –
1) Lot 249 – Michael McDowell failed to give justice to Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic horror short story. Even with a good star-cast, the screenplay and execution is childish. The iconic story deserves a full-length movie.

PROS –
1) A couple on their way to Seattle lost their way to an abandoned town of Gatlin where a cult of children led by a child named Isaac, have killed the entire adult population to appease a supernatural deity called “He Who Walks Behind the Rows”.

CONS –
1) While the plot is promising, the execution is equally pathetic.
2) Terrible performance from lead actors. The only actor worth watching is John Franklin [as Isaac] because of his particular looks.

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) A prank goes too far for a shy telekinetic teenage girl on prom night.
2) The pig-blood prank on clueless Carrie rejoicing her win is one of the most disturbing scenes in a horror movie. The prank itself is more shocking than the prom massacre.
3) Piper Laurie’s performance as Carrie’s abusive Bible-basher mother gives us a better perspective on the mental state of Carrie.
4) Contest Winners – Pino Donaggio.

PROS –
1) A classic coming-of-age movie influencing a generation of directors and artists.
2) An adventure of self-discovery by four friends on a hike to find a dead body of a missing boy.
3) End credits: Stand By Me – Ben E King
4) Among the four young actors, River Phoenix’s performance as “Chris” stands out.

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) This movie would have ended as just another sci-fi horror movie without the character of Mrs. Carmody [played by Marcia Gay Harden]. The entire movie came into life, when this bible-bashing boss-bitch character took the central stage, leading her minions like Jack in Lord of the Flies.
2) Lovecraftian giant creatures from a parallel universe came into our world through some portal thanks to a failed military scientific experiment.
3) The climax is unsettling. Just unsettling.

Ollie: As a species, we’re fundamentally insane. Put more than two of us in a room, we pick sides and start dreaming up reasons to kill one another. Why do you think we invented politics and religion?

Amanda Dunfrey: People are basically good; decent. My god, David, we’re a civilized society.
David Drayton: Sure, as long as the machines are working and you can dial 911. But you take those things away, you throw people in the dark, you scare the shit out of them – no more rules.

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) A compelling performance from Carla Gugino as Jessie. The audiences will sense the entrapment along with the main protagonist just like Rear Window (1954).
2) This movie is neither a survival film like 127 Hours (2010) nor a slasher film like Saw (2004). This Stephen King‘s story is about a sexually abused woman fighting her childhood nightmares and finally coming out triumphantly.
3) Carel Struycken as “the man made of moonlight”.

Verdict – 1/5

Pros –
1) It’s classic retelling of “The Legend of Bishop Hatto“. Stephen King’s original story borrowed heavily from this Robert Southey’s classic.

Cons –
1) Not scary at all. It’s a moral science story of karma of what goes around comes around

Verdict – 3/5

Pros –

1) The Rated-R story and execution.
2) Teenage kids defeating a supernatural-clown. “The Losers Club” is not your typical nerdy, adventure loving Goonies. They are a wild bunch of foul-mouthed badass.
3) The sink-blood-fountain scene; Pennywise in the projecter scene.

Cons –

1) A creepy town with zero concerned parents. What kind of town is this? School bullies killing pushover kids, carving their initials with a knife on their victims. Psychopathic mother feeding pills to her kid and a father sexually assaulting his daughter.
2) To beat this kind of shapeshifting supernatural villain, it usually needs Batman, Justice League and the entire Avengers team.
