The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) An inexperienced man is made the president of a company as part of a stock scam.
2) The fictional invention of the “hula hoop” is the central element of the plot.
3) A comedy movie with caricaturish stock characters. The dystopian mailroom of Hudsucker Industries was surreal.

CONS –
1) The climactic fantasy element of freezing time by stopping the giant clock was baffling. The supernatural element doesn’t fit with the movie.

VERDICT – 0/5

PROS –
1) Star-studded cast.

CONS –
1) It’s a bad western from all standards. It’s neither a conventional western nor it is revisionist. Too much style over substance.
2) You can smell the Harmonica like revenge plot from a mile. The primary “Lady” plot with Sharon Stone, in fact, is the most boring plot.
3) Leonardo DiCaprio as “The Kid” is quite annoying.

Darkman (1990)

CULT – 1

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) An homage movie to The Phantom of the Opera, The Elephant Man, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Frankenstein. A tribute to all freaks and monsters.
2) It’s a fun-filled 90s super-hero movie.
3) Sam Raimi doesn’t forget to be funny. Adding Bruce Campbell as Darkman in the final shot opened the way for any other actor to reprising the role of Peyton Westlake / Darkman in the future.

CONS –

QUOTE –
Strack: You let me die, and you become as bad as me. Worse. You can’t. I know you too well. Dropping me is not really an option for you. It’s not something you could live with.
Darkman: I’m learning to live with a lot of things.

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) A Coen Bros. movie not directed by them. A companion piece to Fargo (1996)
2) Oscar-worthy performance of Billy Bob Thornton as Jacob stands out.

CONS –
1) 30 minutes too long.

Verdict – 3/5

Pros –

1) Stephen Lang as The Blind Man.
2) A tinge of Hitchcock’s “Psycho”. (e.g. The blind man’s home)

Cons –

1) The movie is falsely tagged as a horror film, while the element of body horror is dominating.
2) A story without a protagonist. The Blind Man had all my votes till we saw his underground prison. The 3 robbers do not deserve sympathy from anyone at any point of time.
3) A possible sequel ?

VERDICT  – 3/5

PROS –
1) The only reason to watch this horror movie is Sam Raimi directing it. He’ll keep the audiences amused with his trademark Evil Dead humor.
2) Lorna Raver as Mrs. Sylvia Ganush is one watchable character.

CONS –
1) Interesting primary plot but very few moments of horror.
2) Alison Lohman was clearly not the right actress for the lead role.
