VERDICT – 1/5

PROS –
1) A light hearted family comedy about a grandson’s “war” with his grandpa. Veterans like Robert De Niro & Christopher Walken just having fun being themselves.

CONS –
1) A movie from the cold storage with a stale story done to death.
2) Such a waste of Uma Thurman.

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) The sheer persistence of Jesuit priests for their mission is remarkable. A priest climbing a near impossible Iguazu Falls, to spread the message of God to a hostile tribe with only an oboe is astonishing.
2) Gabriel’s Oboe – Ennio Morricone all-time classic. If God would ever decide to play the oboe, he’ll play this tune.
3) Father Gabriel’s sacrifice – a shepherd who refuses to abandon his herd. Jeremy Irons gave the performance of a lifetime.
4) The opening scene of the priest tied to a wooden cross falling down the falls is one Oscar-worthy scene. A masterpiece conveyed mostly through action rather than dialogues in the first half.
5) Captain Mendoza’s Sisyphean penance.

Joker (2019)

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) Some actors like Jack Nicholson and Jim Carrey are born to play the role of Joker. They could nail this role anytime with a good director. Heath Ledger gave an everlasting performance thanks to visionary Christopher Nolan. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance reflects his hard work and dedication. Seeing his body of work, it’s not surprising to get such performance from him
2) I’ve always considered Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver (1976) as the ultimate lonely man. Even Gotham City in this movie looks like a decaying NY. He was always one step away from being a super-villain like Joker and he kinda became one. The personality of Arthur Fleck has a stark resemblance to Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver (1976) and Rupert Pupkin from The King of Comedy (1982). The presence of Robert De Niro completes the circle.
3) Batman’s original universe is built around Thomas Wayne being a saintly figure who died trying to redeem Gotham. Here he appears as a negative character with the possibility of being Joker’s father.
4) Interestingly, Joaquin Phoenix was part of a weird controversy in David Letterman’s show. Now after this movie, any late-night show host would think twice before inviting him.
5) All in all, it’s a decent origin movie for both Joker and Batman.
6) Songs: “That’s Life” and “Rock and Roll Part 2”.

PROS –
1) Martin Scorsese returns to his favorite genre with an epic cast and he started where he left us last time in Goodfellas (1990).
2) 209 minutes running time ensures an ample amount of screen-time to all legends. A tough fight between Joe Pesci and Al Pacino for the Best Supporting Actor category.
3) It’s not just another movie but a movie event for the cineaste.
4) “In the Still of the Night”
5) The entire de-aging effect is a grand success.

Once Upon a Time in America (1984)

CULT – 1

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) An epic Jewish gangster movie of epic length.
2) Sergio Leone crafting tension in the scene using sounds: that opening sequence with a telephone ring across different scenes – or that coffee stirring scene with De Niro.
2) That iconic view of the Manhattan Bridge before Dominic is killed.
3) Non-linear Rated-R screenplay and great cinematography.
4) Cockeye’s Song by Ennio Morricone
5) Secretary Bailey twist
6) The young actors playing the younger version of the main characters were equally brilliant.

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) The movie explores the lower level of New York mafia with street-bosses and caporegimes.
2) An almost amateur gangster feature film from Martin Scorsese which is no doubt heavily influential in this genre for future films.

CONS –
1) Dark cinematography, underdeveloped characters and boring screenplay.

Verdict – 0/5

Pros –

1) Henry Zebrowski & Mo Collins as Buddy Cop Duo

Cons –

1) One of those movie where you know the entire story just after watching the trailer.
2) Full of middle-school humor and it’s a forgettable one-time watch
3) Aubrey Plaza as Lenore – Why she agreed to do this cheap-ass American Pie rip-off is the big question.Actresses tends to do such role on their debut not after getting established.
4) As far as De Niro is concerned, it appears he just wants to have fun by making such silly comedies. It won’t hurt his legacy anyway.

Cons –

1) It’s neither Devil’s Wears Prada nor As Good As It Gets.
2) Robert De Niro is the title character but mid-way the central story shifts to the relation of Anne Hathaway and Anders Holm which is preposterous for a moviegoer like me who is here only for Bobby.
3) Not a single memorable scene.Absolutely avoidable.
4) Anders Holm as Matt – bad casting for an important role.
5) The movie is full of predictable and stereotypical characters.

Verdict – 1/5

Pros –

1) Treat of watching 3 stalwarts : De Niro, DeVito, Keitel.
2) Some great comic bits delivered by De Niro

Cons –

1) There is no story. The love-story sub-plot is not helping either.
2) Some great sequences but if you add them together the outcome is mediocre.

2) Joe Viterelli as Jelly
3) Watching Robert De Niro as a gangster is always a treat. This role is tailor-made for him.

CONS –
1) Half-baked climax
