The Sisters Brothers (2018)

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) A story of two hitmen brothers, poles apart with conflicting personalities caught up in the California Gold Rush.
2) Hermann Warm‘s formula. I wasn’t expecting it to work. Moreover, the entire “phalanstery project” appeared as a scam.
3) A very fulfilling climax with both brothers returning home.
4) John C. Reilly as Eli Sisters is clearly one notch above every other actor in this movie.

CONS –
1) What is the central plot? The gold rush, Eli Sisters‘ reluctance or Charlie Sisters‘ greed? Whatever it was, it achieved nothing spectacular when the credit rolled.

QUOTE –
Charlie Sisters: You do realize that our father was stark raving mad and we got his foul blood in our veins? That was his gift to us. That blood is why we’re good at what we do.
Eli Sisters: Our father drank, Charlie.
Charlie Sisters: Touché.

Verdict – 0/5

Pros –

1) Thanks, Paul Greengrass for keeping the franchise alive.

Cons –

1) Dull story; like a Bourne parody. It’s like watching some deleted scenes from an old Jason Bourne film.
2) Stupid editing; weird cuts.
3) Not a single noteworthy action sequence
4) Dumb “Deep Dream” sub-plot.
5) 10 years since we last saw Jason Bourne and still we are wondering about Treadstone, Blackbriar.Instead of being the new adventure of Bourne, it’s Bourne still looking for his identity.

Verdict – 2/5

Pros –

1) John Turturro as John Stone : Saved the best of himself for the finale monologue
2) Courtromm drama
3) Riz Ahmed as Naz : The transformation
4) Bill Camp as Dennis Box is a revelation
5) The Cat Subplot analogy with Naz’s.

Cons –

1) Poorna Jagannathan as Nasir’s mother : huge miscast, she should’ve been playing the lawyer instead of Amara Karan
2) The mini-series is NOT a murder mystery or Crime Drama or anything of that sort. It’s a cinematographic-crime-murder-mystery which is being captured by expressions of actors which got nothing to do with solving the crime.
3) Unnecessary sub-plots not impacting the story-line

Nightcrawler (2014)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 1

Verdict – 4/5

Pros –
1) The Business & Management monologues.
2) Jake Gyllenhaal as a quick learning “Bizarro Travis Bickle” with strong bargaining and business skills.
3) An ordinary story pulled up magnificently by great acting performance.
4) The dark side of crime journalism.

Cons –
1) Though Jake Gyllenhaal convincingly played the role of a psychopath freelancer which is undoubtedly one of his best performance, he overacted.
