VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A wrongly convicted man’s lifelong attempt to escape from the brutal French Guiana prison. An epic prison drama of epic length.
2) It’s not a fun thrilling adventure escape movie but one of the most horrific and saddest prison escape movies ever made. We see Papillon’s spirit being broken in solitary confinement where he’s reduced to eat insects and worms for survival. By the end of the movie, we see the lead characters gone weak & senile after multiple failed attempts. Although, it’s narrated in the epilogue that Papillon made it to freedom, the jump from the cliff was nothing less than suicide.
3) After the second escape attempt, we see some fascinating characters making appearance one after the other like the mysterious tattoo-faced hunter, the leper colony chief, the Columbian prisoner, the Indian chief, and the abbess. The screenplay is almost without dialogues during this period.

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) A petty thief and vagrant is imprisoned for crimes he didn’t commit. It took him his father’s death to gather strength to fight for his own justice. An intense prison-drama cum court-room drama.
2) While Daniel Day-Lewis plays the lead character, the most praiseworthy performance is from Pete Postlethwaite as the helpless father and wrongfully accused man keeping his faith in justice until his last breath. His scenes with Daniel Day-Lewis in particular are well-written and performed.
3) The immense presence of Don Baker as Joe. A small role but equally profound screen presence.
4) Opening Credits: Bono and Gavin Friday – In the Name of the Father“.
