VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –

1) A presidential candidate is assassinated, and within the next 3 years, 6 of the witnesses to the killing have mysteriously died. A newspaper reporter, who is also one of the witnesses, begins a personal quest to get to the bottom of this vast conspiracy.

2) An intense political thriller which highlights a fictional multinational corporation called Parallax Corporation behind major professional assassinations.

3) The screenplay is gripping and fast-paced. The climax is aptly pessimistic which shows that the Parallax Corporation is deeply rooted in the system which a petty reporter can’t beat.

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) Investigative journalism at its best. The story of how two young reporters from “The Washington Post” uncovered the details of the Watergate scandal that leads to President Richard Nixon’s resignation.
2) A landmark movie in newspaper-movie genre documenting a significant event in US history.

CONS –
1) A boring movie for an average viewer. Alan J. Pakula could’ve just made a documentary.

QUOTE –
Deep Throat: Oh, I can’t tell you that.
Bob Woodward: But you could tell me that.
Deep Throat: No, I have to do this my way. You tell me what you know, and I’ll confirm. I’ll keep you in the right direction if I can, but that’s all. Just… follow the money.

Three Days of the Condor (1975)

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) Max von Sydow as Joubert is clearly the best character from this story.
2) The Bourne Series is heavily influenced by this movie where a CIA agent is at large escaping from his own organization.

CONS –
1) Entire Faye Dunaway plot was formulaic and unnecessary.
2) The main problem with this movie is the title character being a desk-jockey and not a field operative. This means the audience cannot expect great action scenes. This is where Jason Bourne got an upper hand.

QUOTE –
Joubert: It will happen this way. You may be walking. Maybe the first sunny day of the spring. And a car will slow beside you, and a door will open, and someone you know, maybe even trust, will get out of the car. And he will smile, a becoming smile. But he will leave open the door of the car and offer to give you a lift.

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A political assassination from the perspective of a suave sound recordist and a dumb hooker.
2) Downbeat and disheartening climax. Jack using Sally’s scream in the exploitation film instead of solving the case.
3) Visually stylish film as expected from Brian De Palma. There is obviously a major influence of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation (1974).

CONS –
1) John Lithgow as Burke: By the end of the movie this Anton Chigurh like character became too significant to be neglected.

Verdict – 1/5

Pros –

1) An Irish political thriller with lots of Irish sing-songy accent

Cons –

1) While the movie is projected as “Taken-With-Jackie-Chan” – it’s a political thriller where Chan is the third wheel
2) Hardly any memorable action scenes

VERDICT – 1/5

PROS –
1) An insurance lawyer sent to Berlin to negotiate with the Soviet Union to release a U.S. Air Force pilot in exchange for a Soviet KGB spy. The story from Coen Brothers sounds promising but there not much meat onto it.
2) Janusz Kamiński’s cinematography with some good wide-angle shots is the only saving grace for this movie.
3) The final scene at the Glienicke Bridge.

CONS –
1) Predictable twist and thrills. Anyone interested should watch the 2 minutes trailer and save himself from the ordeal.
2) This movie is a definitive Steven Spielberg’s Oscar bait with Tom Hanks. Another run-of-the-mill period drama.
3) Weak supporting cast. Even Mark Rylance’s performance as Rudolf Abel is overrated.
4) Tediously long with 141 minutes running time.

PROS –

CONS –
1) Unnecessary love angle and shitty climax.
2) Mediocre political-thriller with little consequences. A cliched plot of an aging Secret Service Agent who finishes one last mission before he retires.
