The Tashkent Files (2019)

CULT – 1

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) Very informative & an absolute eye-opener revealing hidden facts on Shastri’s death. The death of a PM certainly needs a widespread discussion even with conspiracy theories.
2) HJ Bhabha death, The Mitrokhin Archive, etc are some of the most noteworthy points of the movie which cannot be undermined.

CONS –
1) Even with a talented pool of actors, there is less acting and more over-acting.
2) The primary structure is clearly copied from 12 Angry Men (1957)
3) Forgettable soundtrack.

Sacred Games (Season 2)

CULT – 0

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) An Osho like Guru running a drug-fueled mission to bring Sat Yug post-nuclear winter. The plan is executed by a Muhammad bin Qasim fanatic, completing his dream of Gazwa-E-Hind.
2) Full of smart references like Dawood Ibrahim, Karan Johar, RGV, Kangana Ranaut, Divya Bharti, etc.

CONS –
1) The entire Kenya sub-plot doesn’t add anything to the story.
2) The cliffhanger ending is pointless as all the secrets are already out. Also, with most the main character being dead, what’s left for next season?
3) The mob-lynching plot is clearly part of Anurag Kashyap’s personal outrage rather than adding anything to the story.

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) One time watch small-town comedy.

CONS –
1) New age Bollywood is clearly scraping the bottom of the barrel for small-town stories.
2) Pankaj Tripathi is clearly miscast in a role tailor-made for Rajpal Yadav.
3) The movie ruined the original Laung Laachi song thanks to Tulsi Kumar.

Mirzapur (Season 1)

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) Ep# 7: “Lions of Mirzapur” – Best episode of the series.
2) Geographical tour of Purvanchal for the uninitiated.
3) A good ensemble of actors.

CONS –
1) If this show would have released before Gangs Of Wasseypur and Sacred Games, this probably would’ve been a success. But this genre belongs to Anurag Kashyap and his team, and he already raised the bar too high for any run-of-the-mill copy.
2) Shallow characters and soulless plot. Entire Rasika Dugal’s plot seems forcefully shoved for cheap thrills.
3) Pankaj Tripathi is now seriously typecasted in this role. Just like in Gurgaon (2017), his performance is mediocre.

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) Spooky and funny. Possibly one of the best Bollywood movie of this genre. Great debut for Amar Kaushik.
2) Supporting cast: Pankaj Tripathi as Rudra got the best lines, and Vijay Raaz cameo was spot-on.
3) Shraddha Kapoor as the unnamed femme fatale. The final plot-twist involving her was remarkable.

CONS –
1) The soundtrack is forgettable but who cares. The songs and dances are added just to promote the movie as a regular Bollywood movie.

Verdict – 2/5

Pros –
1) A morbidly dark movie without a single cheerful character in a fast and unpredictable plot.
2) Aamir Bashir as Bhupi – the only character who looks realistic.

Cons –
1) Cementing established stereotypes of Gurgaon as the ultimate crime city.
2) This movie is a classic case of good actors in wrong roles. None of the actors are suited for the role given.

CULT – 1

Verdict – 5/5

Pros –
1) Team Phantom of Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane & Varun Grover have outdone themselves with this mind-blowing Mumbai noir. This series explores Mumbai underworld beyond the RGV point of view. What a debut for Netflix India!
2) Bold casting – Apart from the main cast, the supporting cast stands-out.From Sunny Pawar to Luke Kenny, from Jitendra Joshi to Elnaaz Norouzi.
3) Soundtrack. Right from the opening credit theme to the background score. The promo songs from Divine are also fabulous. (Kaam 25 & Jungli Sher)
4) Kukoo jaw-dropping revelation.Kudos to Kubra Sait for this bold role.
5) Extremely well-written screenplay. Two timelines executed simultaneously smoothly. The socio-political commentary by Gaitonde gives more weight to the series. The show is unapologetically multi-lingual.
6) Hindu mythology is an essential backdrop of this series. Episode titles from Mahabharata, Mandala theme in every episode etc.
7) Constable Katekar subplot.

Cons –
1) I wasn’t expecting a cliffhanger finale with a possible Season 2.
2) Nawaz role looks like an extension of Faizal from Wasseypur. He is so good at playing such characters that he’s typecasted just like De Niro as a gangster.
3) The nuclear connection is predictable.
4) Radhika Apte – not suited for a RAW officer role.
