Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones (2019)

CONTENT – 1
EXECUTION – 1
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 3/3

PROS –
1) Dave Chappelle in all its glory.
2) Louis C.K. did an SNL monologue on child molester and pedophiles. That bit pushed the envelope by making jokes out of this extremely inappropriate topic. Dave Chappelle clearly tore the envelope this time.
3) How Twitter screenshots from yesteryears are destroying careers. How T is different from L, G, & B. How anyone with a dick should shut up on abortion laws. How gun laws can be amended only if black people start hoarding guns.

CONS –
N/A

Seriously, I wanna know. Like, wh-why is it… why is it that… that I can say the word “nigger” with impunity……but I can’t say the word “faggot”?”And she said, “Because, David, you are not gay.” I said, “Well, Renée…I’m not a nigger either.”

Sacred Games (Season 2)

STORY – 0
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 0

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) An Osho like Guru running a drug-fueled mission to bring Sat Yug post-nuclear winter. The plan is executed by a Muhammad bin Qasim fanatic, completing his dream of Gazwa-E-Hind.
2) Full of smart references like Dawood Ibrahim, Karan Johar, RGV, Kangana Ranaut, Divya Bharti, etc.

CONS –
1) The entire Kenya sub-plot doesn’t add anything to the story.
2) The cliffhanger ending is pointless as all the secrets are already out. Also, with most the main character being dead, what’s left for next season?
3) The mob-lynching plot is clearly part of Anurag Kashyap’s personal outrage rather than adding anything to the story.

Aziz Ansari: Right Now (2019)

CONTENT – 1
EXECUTION – 1
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 3/3

PROS –
1) A calmer Aziz post #MeToo, lampooning the hyper-woke culture.
2) The “Nazi-Pizza” bit.
3) The bit on R. Kelly and Michael Jackson, reigniting the argument on separating the man from his art.
4) An emotional climax.

But now, when I see you guys here, it hits me in a different way. I think about what it means that all you guys, you drove down here, you waited in line. And you did all of this stuff just to hear me talk into a microphone for, like, an hour or so. And it means the world to me, ’cause…I saw the world…where I don’t ever get to do this again.

Love, Death & Robots (Season 1)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
MUSIC – 1
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 4/4

PROS –
1) I’ll rate LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS better than Black Mirror and Electric Dreams. The core of any sci-fi story can be explained in a few minutes and we don’t a 90 minutes episode for character development. The short duration of each episode is the biggest asset of the show.
2) Stories from various genres including Sci-Fi, Supernatural, Fantasy, Post-Apocalypse, Absurdism, Cyberpunk, etc.
3) Exceptional animation quality from various studios around the world. Every next episode is a surprise.
4) “Good Hunting” – Exploring the Huli jing mythology in Cyberpunk Hong-Kong
5) “Suits” – Who is the real invader?
6) “Zima Blue” – Absurdist robot.
7) “When the Yogurt Took Over” – A warning for the inevitable economic collapse.
8) Matthew Perryman Jones – Living in the Shadows

CONS –
1) “Sucker of Souls” – a plain storyline
2) “The Witness” – a mind-fuck story told for a zillionth time now.
3) “Helping Hand” – 127 Hrs in space
4) “Fish Night” – Great animation with a mediocre story

Murder Mystery (2019)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 0

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) An Agatha Christie kind of pan-European whodunit murder-mystery with a diverse list of suspects. Instead of Hercule Poirot, it’s the bumbling couple of Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.

CONS –
1) One time watch.
2) A better supporting cast would’ve been nice.

QUOTE –
Charles Cavendish: That is the Quince dagger. Chinese steel, jewels from across the Orient. A gift to the family from Marco Polo. Or so the legend says.
Audrey Spitz: God. Nick’s grandmother gave us a toaster from Sears. Or so the legend says.

I Am Mother (2019)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 0

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) An AI decides to eliminate flawed humanity and rebooting it with “ideal” human beings.
2) Hilary Swank plot-twist. She was nothing but a pawn planted by the same AI for the final psychological test of the daughter,  before handing over the responsibility of embryos to the daughter.
3) No sub-plots slowing down the pace of the movie.

CONS –
N/A

QUOTE –
AI: Tell me…do you remember your mother? Curious, isn’t it?

Ray Romano: Right Here, Around the Corner (2019)

CONTENT – 0
EXECUTION – 1
CULT – 0

VERDICT – 1/3

PROS –
1) Ray Romano’s self-pity comedy remains his main USP. This time he shared his experience of being a 60-year-old family man.
2) Climax with his real family

CONS –
1) Average content, no big laughs

Riverdale (Season 1)

STORY – 0
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 1
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) An extraordinary teen-drama adaptation of Archie Comics characters from light-hearted comic-book stories to a well-executed dark murder-mystery.
2) Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper and Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones occupied the slot of central characters. Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom is also noteworthy.
3) Good soundtrack through-out the 13 episodes. e.g. Dean Lewis – Waves

CONS –
1) This show is riddled with aesthetic faces and that’s what keeps the show gripping even with mediocre sub-plots.
2) Every character is having multiple romantic link ups with every other character in every other episode. After a few episodes, the audiences will lose count.
3) Concepts of homosexuality, incest, forbidden love etc. are added left, right and center.

QUOTE –
Jughead: In case you haven’t noticed, I’m weird. I’m a weirdo. I don’t fit in, And I don’t want to fit in.

Gerald’s Game (2017)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 0

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) A compelling performance from Carla Gugino as Jessie. The audiences will sense the entrapment along with the main protagonist just like Rear Window (1954).
2) This movie is neither a survival film like 127 Hours (2010) nor a slasher film like Saw (2004). This Stephen King‘s story is about a sexually abused woman fighting her childhood nightmares and finally coming out triumphantly.
3) Carel Struycken as “the man made of moonlight”.

CONS –
N/A

QUOTE –
Jessie Burlingame: You’re so much smaller than I remember.
