The Curse of the Werewolf (1961)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1

CULT – 0

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) A boy born of a mute rape victim on Christmas day becomes a Werewolf and terrorizes a small town in 18th century Spain.
2) The young man who transforms into the Werewolf is not completely evil but rather a sympathetic character as he’s willing to get himself killed to save the innocent victims.

CONS –
1) The first act of the movie introduces us to a cruel marqués who imprisons a begger. This entire subplot (though intriguing) was completely futile in the larger context of the movie.
2) We didn’t get the full view of the monster until the climax.

QUOTE –
What worries me is that the girl upstairs is about to have her baby. And as like as not…it will be born on the very hour of our Lord’s birth. For an unwanted child to be born then…is an insult to heaven,señor. That’s what I was taught.

Verdict – 5/5

Pros –
1) BEST.MONSTER.MOVIE.EVER.MADE.
2) Even better than Pacific Rim (2013) which followed similar action sequences of giant monster fighting.
3)Full body view of the fight, unlike the disaster Godzilla (2014) which was only showing glimpses of the fight with silly subplots.
4) 70s set up with 70s music
5) Kong in action within 30 minutes into the movie without wasting any time on built up.
6) The movie is not just about Kong but also includes other giants monster on the island.End credits with Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah.

Preston Packard: And remember the story of Icarus, whose father gave him wings of wax. Warned him not to fly too close to the sun. But the exhilaration was too great. So he flew higher and higher, until the sun melted his wings, and he fell into the sea. The US Army is not an irresponsible father. So they gave us wings of hot Pennsylvania steel, guaranteed not to melt.

Verdict – 1/5

Cons –
1) Too much time wasted in built up. All peek-a-boo and blink-and-miss will only frustrate the audiences.
2) Ken Watanabe and Bryan Cranston wasted.
3) Worst Lead actors possible; bad casting.
4) Terrible “family-sub-plot”
5) As a summary, “Godzilla” is the first 2 minutes of “Pacific Rim“.
