The Pelican Brief (1993)

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) An investigative thriller that unfolds slowly like a Jason Bourne movie without the action sequences.

CONS –
1) Slow, boring and too long. From the very beginning, the President is revealed to be the real culprit and it became pointless to explore the movie for another 100 minutes.

VERDICT – 1/5

PROS –
1) Emma Thompson as Katherine Newbury is the only saving grace of this one time watch.

CONS –
1) The Devil Wears Prada (2006) revisited.
2) I would not even try to explore the socio-political message hidden in the plot of this average movie.

Blow Out (1981)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A political assassination from the perspective of a suave sound recordist and a dumb hooker.
2) Downbeat and disheartening climax. Jack using Sally’s scream in the exploitation film instead of solving the case.
3) Visually stylish film as expected from Brian De Palma. There is obviously a major influence of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation (1974).

CONS –
1) John Lithgow as Burke: By the end of the movie this Anton Chigurh like character became too significant to be neglected.

Verdict – 2/5

Pros –
1) The thermostat skit – only scene where an effort was made
2) Sully cameo
3) Ebullient chuckle as expected – better than its prequel

Cons –
1) It’s a one-time watch movie full of jokes from 1980s
