VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) An insurance investigator is hired by a publishing house to investigate the disappearance of popular (and eccentric) horror novelist, Sutter Cane, and recover the manuscript for Cane’s final novel. The search led him to Hobb’s End, the fictional setting for many of Cane’s works.
2) A meta-horror movie where the book central character finally realizes that he was a character in the book all along.
3) Another John Carpenter homage to H. P. Lovecraft.

CONS –
1) This movie may be scary in 1978, but watching it in 2020 is not at all frightening.
2) 60 minutes are spent in built-up while only last the 10 minutes involve some actual slasher action.

4) Darwin Joston’s intriguing character [Napoleon Wilson] with an unusually calm demeanor.
