VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) All publicity is good publicity. Although the movie is set in the 1920s, it eerily summarises the modern media, making and breaking a person’s public image, creating false gods & celebrities for gullible readers & audiences with a short attention span.
2) Great screenplay and editing amalgamating the entire movie with jazz performances.
3) John C. Reilly as Amos, the simpleton pushover husband of Roxie Hart.
4) Magnificent musical numbers moving the story forward.

CONS –
N/A

Matron Mama Morton: You’re talking to the wrong people.

VERDICT – 1/5

PROS –
1) The plot-twist where Mrs. Hudson is revealed as the daughter of Prof. Moriarty.

CONS –
1) A great opportunity wasted. One of the most awaited movie in recent times starring the greatest comedic-duo of our times was ruined by caricaturish performances and witless writing.

QUOTE –
Holmes: When one eliminates the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, is the truth.
Watson: But this is absurd. Holmes, you must know in your heart…
Holmes: The heart is for pumping blood. The truth is the truth!

Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)

VERDICT – 2/4

PROS –
1) Bill Hader as J.P. Spamley and his sidekick Gord were definitely the two best characters.
2) John C. Reilly as Ralph delivered as expected. The post-credit rick-rolling was spot on.

CONS –
1) The countless pop-culture references in every other movie are not making it better. It’s rather getting sickening.
2) The entire BuzzzTube plot was very dystopian and probably planted in the plot on purpose.

QUOTE –
J.P. Spamley: Wanna get rich playing video games?

The Sisters Brothers (2018)

CULT – 0

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) A story of two hitmen brothers, poles apart with conflicting personalities caught up in the California Gold Rush.
2) Hermann Warm‘s formula. I wasn’t expecting it to work. Moreover, the entire “phalanstery project” appeared as a scam.
3) A very fulfilling climax with both brothers returning home.
4) John C. Reilly as Eli Sisters is clearly one notch above every other actor in this movie.

CONS –
1) What is the central plot? The gold rush, Eli Sisters‘ reluctance or Charlie Sisters‘ greed? Whatever it was, it achieved nothing spectacular when the credit rolled.

QUOTE –
Charlie Sisters: You do realize that our father was stark raving mad and we got his foul blood in our veins? That was his gift to us. That blood is why we’re good at what we do.
Eli Sisters: Our father drank, Charlie.
Charlie Sisters: Touché.

Carnage (2011)

CULT – 1

Verdict – 4/5

Pros –
1) It’s a stage-play. Even with cuts and editing, this 80 minutes comedy-drama looks like a play.
2) Characters gradually dropping the facade. Except for Christoph Waltz’s character, all 3 characters were pretending to be someone else at the beginning of the film and as the film progresses the true self emerges.

Cons –

CULT – 1

Verdict – 4/5

Pros –
1) Daniel Day-Lewis as Bill the Butcher – Probably his definitive role. It’s a shame he didn’t win the Oscar for this role.
2) Music: “Shimmy She Wobble” – Dead Rabbits riot

Cons –
1) To make the movie an “epic“, the length is unnecessarily increased. For the first 2 hrs, the story is stuck in the same place. The movie kick-starts once Amsterdam’s identity is revealed.
2) Epic start but not an epic climax.
3) Son returns to avenge his father’s death – secretly working for his father’s killer eventually killing him – every 80’s Bollywood movie ever.

Pros –

1) Nick Offerman as Lord Bruno – Delivered as expected

Cons –

1) Expectation was a mad reefer comedy but not a single compelling scene
2) Waste of a great ensemble
