Hard Eight (1996)

CULT – 1

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A guilt-ridden professional gambler Sydney is helping out a young man by teaching him the tricks of the trade. What the young man doesn’t know is that Sydney killed his father years ago.
2) A solid crime thriller with an ominous theme. There is very little action that too towards the end of the movie but still, we can anticipate the forthcoming violence.
3) Philip Baker Hall’s performance as Sydney is single-handedly elevating the movie. His background is not widely elaborated but his expressions and mannerism speak for themselves.

Hook (1991)

CULT – 0

VERDICT – 1/5

PROS –
1) Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook, & Bob Hoskins as Smee are the saving grace of this annoyingly childish movie. Captain Hook‘s entrance with Smee witty one-liners is the only well-written scene.
2) Pirate baseball match.

CONS –
1) Over-theatrical acting by most actors. Julia Roberts character as Tinker Bell is excessively irritating in particular. The scenes with Lost Boys are another headache.
2) Tediously formulaic Spielberg family movie.

The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) An imposter on a murder spree to hide his misdeeds.
2) Mostly shot in scenic Italy.

CONS –
1) Tedious first half, boring screenplay overall. The movie is 30 minutes too long. It’s more drama and less thriller.

Contagion (2011)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) It seems scientifically accurate with recent similar outbreaks of H1N1 and SARS.
2) Climax explaining the source of the virus.
3) This movie appears like a prequel of those post-apocalyptic movies and TV series where a deadly virus had swept Earth’s population.

CONS –
1) This movie is not an action-adventure disaster movie but only a scientific mock-drill of possible events in a virus outbreak.

Shakespeare in Love (1998)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 0

Verdict – 3/5

PROS –
1) The fictional story with possibilities beyond a 2 hrs film.
2) Tom Wilkinson as Hugh Fennyman
3) Colin Firth as Lord Wessex

CONS –
1) A passionate love story but in fact it’s the most boring sub-plot of the film.
2) The interesting element of the film which could’ve made it funnier is not much explored.
3) There is no way this movie is better than Saving Private Ryan (1998). This Oscar win definitely didn’t age well.
