Joker (2019)

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) Some actors like Jack Nicholson and Jim Carrey are born to play the role of Joker. They could nail this role anytime with a good director. Heath Ledger gave an everlasting performance thanks to visionary Christopher Nolan. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance reflects his hard work and dedication. Seeing his body of work, it’s not surprising to get such performance from him
2) I’ve always considered Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver (1976) as the ultimate lonely man. Even Gotham City in this movie looks like a decaying NY. He was always one step away from being a super-villain like Joker and he kinda became one. The personality of Arthur Fleck has a stark resemblance to Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver (1976) and Rupert Pupkin from The King of Comedy (1982). The presence of Robert De Niro completes the circle.
3) Batman’s original universe is built around Thomas Wayne being a saintly figure who died trying to redeem Gotham. Here he appears as a negative character with the possibility of being Joker’s father.
4) Interestingly, Joaquin Phoenix was part of a weird controversy in David Letterman’s show. Now after this movie, any late-night show host would think twice before inviting him.
5) All in all, it’s a decent origin movie for both Joker and Batman.
6) Songs: “That’s Life” and “Rock and Roll Part 2”.

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) A must watch detective crime thriller of epic proportion with 17 years of non-linear storyline. It’s HBO’s reply to Memories of Murder (2003).
2) Matthew McConaughey as Detective Cohle gave a great performance of a sociopathic cop.
3) Opening song: “Far from Any Road”
4) Unapologetically good ol’ misogynist show with a high level of testosterone.
5) The climactic fulfilling scene between Rust & Marty

Verdict – 4/5

Pros –
1) Cassette Futurism – A great entry in this genre.A dystopian future with Russian speaking USA.
2) Sonoya Mizuno as Dr. Azumi Fujita – Best character from the show with a distinctly 80s look.
3) Billy Magnussen as Jed singing “Every Breath You Take” unplugged
4) Multiple anthology stories inside one show. Both lead and supporting characters playing distinct roles from different eras with different personalities.
5) There are only 2 confirmed aspects of this story which are occurring in the real world – The mother-son rivalry and the Milgrim courtroom trial. Rest all can be psychological.

Cons –
1) Upbeat climax but mediocre third act.
