The Color of Money (1986)

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) The movie started as ‘Fast’ Eddie being a retired pool hustler finding a new talented kid Vincent. But as the movie progresses, the Mentor-Protégé relationship turns into a rivalry.
2) Martin Scorsese gave a proper closure to Eddie’s character.
3) The turning point of the movie is the scene with Amos [played by a young Forest Whitaker] hustling the hustler. It shows how humiliation can invoke dormant pride.

CONS –
1) Just like it’s predecessor, The Hustler (1961), it’s a one time watch slow sports-drama.

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) Robin Williams’ one-man show. Probably his best.
2) Opening radio monologue. In fact, every time Robin Williams is DJing is pure unbridled entertainment.
3) Great soundtrack.
4) Bruno Kirby as Lt. Steven Hauk, the constant killjoy. Not easy to play the heavy against crowd favorite.

CONS –
1) The entire anti-war sub-plot with Trinh & Tuan is absolutely boring.
2) Every time when Robin Williams is not on the screen, the movie is unbearable.

Excuse me, sir. Seeing as how the VP is such a VIP, shouldn’t we keep the PC on the q.t., because if it leaks to the VC, he could end up an MIA, and then we’d all be put on KP.

Sorry to Bother You (2018)

CULT – 1

Verdict – 4/5

Pros –
1) One of the most important film of the decade. This absurdist sci-fi black comedy joined the ranks of other anti-consumerism movies like They Live, Fight Club and Idiocracy.
2) Kickass direction by debutant Boots Riley. It’s funny, racist, offensive and powerful satire like Get Out.
3) “I Got the S#*@ Kicked Out of Me!” – this show within the movie summarizes the modern sugar-coated dystopian TV contents.

Cons –
1) Climax is not ambiguous but vague.

Verdict – 3/5

Pros –
1) Return of Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue
2) Michael B. Jordan as “Killmonger” – Villain with a motive
3) Winston Duke as M’Baku – entertaining character

Cons –
1) The whole Wakanda civilization is full of contradiction – super advanced science with a functional xenophobic monarchy where the king is chosen by a ritual combat.
2) Entertaining one-time watch origin story- it’s hyperbolically cherished by critics as an emancipating movie for the black community.
3) Forest Whitaker as Zuri – seriously stereotyped.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

Verdict – 5/5

Pros –

1) Fast paced – action packed – to the point. Only star war film with no annoying sub-plot.
2) AT-AT, hyperspace, light-saber fight – what more a fan can ask !
3) Darth Vader in his prime.
4) CGI likenesses of Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher is criticized in some media forums and I disagree with it. If we can recreate our favorite characters for the story, there is nothing wrong with that. It gives more authenticity to the movie.
5) K-2SO & Chirrut Îmwe are the best outcomes.
6) Star destroyer crash scene

Verdict – 0/5

Pros –

1) The primary message : If you could see your whole life from start to finish, would you change things?
2) Jeremy Renner ended up delivering the best romantic lines after Han Solo in the “Empire Strikes Back”.

Cons –
1) Pretentious movie where the director is trying to merge the universes of Ridley Scott & Chris Nolan and falling flat on his face.
2) Denis Villeneuve is undoubtedly the most over-rated director of our time. “Blade Runner 2049” is in wrong hands.
3) The movie is boring as hell and only last few minutes of revelation are noteworthy.
