VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) An exterminator’s drug-induced journey to the nightmarish surreal world of bugs, centipedes, shape-shifting talking typewriters, spies, and homosexuals.
2) Grotesque as expected from Cronenberg with some fascinating practical effects with prosthetics.

CONS –
1) Surreal set-up but an incomprehensible plot. It’s non-sense fiction.

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) Twin brothers and successful gynecologists are living a synchronized lifestyle and sometimes substitute each other in professional as well as in personnel life. Their understanding deteriorates when one of them falls in love with a drug-addict actress.

CONS –
1) There is no thrill, no mystery. Up to an extent, Nolan’s The Prestige (2006) borrowed some elements from the movie however there is nothing else in the plot.
2) It’s a slow movie with a few moments of Cronenberg’s trademark body-horror.
3) Apart from Jeremy Irons, there is a complete absence of a good supporting cast.

PROS –
1) “Mecca” by K’naan
2) Some clever one-liners.

CONS –
1) Surreal but pretentious. Low production value, disappointing CGI, amateurish cinematography, and sloppy acting. Robert Pattinson as the lead is miscast.
2) A social commentary on the capitalist system but not at all gripping as a movie.

CULT – 1

Verdict – 5/5

Pros –
1) An eccentric scientist’s experiment went wrong. The consequence is a body-horror nightmare.
2) Jeff Goldblum as Seth Brundle. His transformation or disintegration from a one version of “Brundlefly” to another grotesque version is incredible. Credits to the make-up team.
3) Howard Shore’s score.
4) Not a single subplot. The direction is top-notch and to the point.
5) The work-out scene, the arm-wrestling scene, the parturition nightmare are not for the faint-hearted.

Cons –

Verdict – 4/5

Pros –

1) A surreal adventure. A semi-prophetic story from Cronenberg exploring the advent of TV as a tool to control the mind of the viewer.
2) CGI: belly-slit sequences, the gun’s fusion with Max’s hand
3) The scary subplot of Cathode Ray Mission – where homeless people are made to binge TV.
4) Body-horror – not palatable for weak-hearted

Cons –

1) The climax is not ambiguous but confusing.

Quote –

Brian O’Blivion: The battle for the mind of North America will be fought in the video arena: the Videodrome. The television screen is the retina of the mind’s eye. Therefore, the television screen is part of the physical structure of the brain. Therefore, whatever appears on the television screen emerges as raw experience for those who watch it. Therefore, television is reality, and reality is less than television.
