VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A scientist died leaving his unfinished humanoid in the Gothic mansion full of steampunk equipments. He’s brought into the town’s community by a woman and soon he becomes the talk of the town attracting new friends and foes.
2) Tim Burton’s trademark gothic protagonist straight out of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. In the movie, Burton created 2 distinct worlds. While Edward Scissorhands is dark & gothic, the town is vividly colorful.
3) It’s basically a bedtime fairy-tale of “a beauty and a beast” told by an elderly woman to her granddaughter. The theme is similar to King Kong, The Phantom of the Opera, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, etc.

PROS –
1) An homage movie to The Phantom of the Opera, The Elephant Man, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Frankenstein. A tribute to all freaks and monsters.
2) It’s a fun-filled 90s super-hero movie.
3) Sam Raimi doesn’t forget to be funny. Adding Bruce Campbell as Darkman in the final shot opened the way for any other actor to reprising the role of Peyton Westlake / Darkman in the future.

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) All publicity is good publicity. Although the movie is set in the 1920s, it eerily summarises the modern media, making and breaking a person’s public image, creating false gods & celebrities for gullible readers & audiences with a short attention span.
2) Great screenplay and editing amalgamating the entire movie with jazz performances.
3) John C. Reilly as Amos, the simpleton pushover husband of Roxie Hart.
4) Magnificent musical numbers moving the story forward.

3) Tate Taylor was clearly trying to recreate the magic of “Gone Girl” but not everyone is as good as David Fincher.
