The Boxer (1997)

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) An ex-IRA volunteer trying to rebuild his life after spending 14-years in prison amid a turbulent Northern Ireland. Gerard McSorley’s performance as the primary antagonist Harry is the only noteworthy character from the movie.

CONS –
1) It’s neither a full-fledged sports-drama nor a conventional romantic movie. IRA skirmishes remain the core of the movie.
2) For a movie named The Boxer, the boxing choreography is quite mediocre.

In the Name of the Father (1993)

CULT – 1

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) A petty thief and vagrant is imprisoned for crimes he didn’t commit. It took him his father’s death to gather strength to fight for his own justice. An intense prison-drama cum court-room drama.
2) While Daniel Day-Lewis plays the lead character, the most praiseworthy performance is from Pete Postlethwaite as the helpless father and wrongfully accused man keeping his faith in justice until his last breath. His scenes with Daniel Day-Lewis in particular are well-written and performed.
3) The immense presence of Don Baker as Joe. A small role but equally profound screen presence.
4) Opening Credits: Bono and Gavin Friday – In the Name of the Father“.

Detective: Next time you’ll see Belfast, they’ll be flying day trips to the moon.
Gerry Conlon: I always wanted to be an astronaut.

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) Daniel Day-Lewis as Bill the Butcher – Probably his definitive role. It’s a shame he didn’t win the Oscar for this role.
2) Music: “Shimmy She Wobble” – Dead Rabbits riot

CONS –
1) To make the movie an “epic”, the length is unnecessarily increased. For the first 2 hrs, the story is stuck in the same place. The movie kick-starts once Amsterdam’s identity is revealed.
2) Epic start but not an epic climax.
3) Son returns to avenge his father’s death – secretly working for his father’s killer eventually killing him – every 80’s Bollywood movie ever.
