PROS –
1) A 11-yr old street-smart kid witnessed the suicide of a mafia lawyer. Before the lawyer killed himself he gave sensitive information to the kid for which now he’s wanted by the mafia as well a flamboyant US Attorney with political ambitions. The only person he can trust now is a female lawyer with a troubled past.
2) Brad Renfro as Mark Sway is the star of the movie. He doesn’t play a typical “scared witness” but rather a go-getter kid with a witty and confident attitude.
3) John Grisham’s story assures entertainment with legal knowledge. The screenplay is fast-paced and gripping.
4) Tommy Lee Jones and Susan Sarandon one-on-one against each other is the highlight of the movie.

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A meta spy-thriller beyond the guessing capacity of viewers. The lead characters of the story are a merely expendable pawns in the great game.
2) MI6 plant their agent Leamas in HVA to implicate a German officer (Mundt). But in reality, Mundt is himself an MI6 informant, and the entire plan was to get rid of another German officer (Fiedler) as he was getting too suspicious of Mundt. Leamas and his lover Nancy were just small cogs in the grand spy machine.
3) Richard Burton’s final angry monologue on espionage to Nancy was just brilliant.
4) Leamas‘ final decision of not jumping the wall to safety signifies his exhaustion from dreadful spy-games.

QUOTE –
i)
Alec Leamas: I reserve the right to be ignorant. That’s the Western way of life.

ii)
Alec Leamas: What the hell do you think spies are? Moral philosophers measuring everything they do against the word of God or Karl Marx? They’re not! They’re just a bunch of seedy, squalid bastards like me: little men, drunkards, queers, henpecked husbands, civil servants playing cowboys and Indians to brighten their rotten little lives. Do you think they sit like monks in a cell, balancing right against wrong? Yesterday I would have killed Mundt because I thought him evil and an enemy. But not today. Today he is evil and my friend. London needs him. They need him so that the great, moronic masses you admire so much can sleep soundly in their flea-bitten beds again. They need him for the safety of ordinary, crummy people like you and me…

Nan Perry: You killed Fiedler!

Alec Leamas: How big does a cause have to be before you kill your friends? What about your Party? There’s a few million bodies on that path!

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) A father trying a make a work-life balance after his wife abandoned him and his child all of a sudden after 8-yrs of marriage.
2) Dustin Hoffman’s performance as the father stands out. Audiences will sympathize more with his character as he got more screen-time as compared to his estranged wife.
3) This movie will get divided opinions depending on the gender and perspective of the audience.

CONS –
1) The story and screenplay are little biased towards the husband and demonizes the wife.
2) This child-custody story is over-rated. The courtroom drama is hardly 10 minutes long.

QUOTE –
Margaret Phelps: Joanna is a very unhappy woman and it took a lot of courage to walk out this door.
Ted Kramer: How much courage does it take to walk out on your kid?

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) Powerful acting, great monologues, and brilliant writing. This 3-hrs long black & white courtroom-drama is the epitome of good cinema.
2) The colossal presence of Burt Lancaster in the courthouse as the guilt-ridden Nazi judge. He was silent most of the time but the monologue he delivered in the 3rd act of the movie was impending from the very first minute.
3) The movie depicts post-war German people trying to exonerate their guilty conscience by gaslighting themselves about not knowing what was happening in the concentration camps during the Nazi regime.

CONS –

QUOTE –
Ernst Janning: My counsel says we were not aware of the extermination of the millions. He would give you the excuse: We were only aware of the extermination of the hundreds. Does that make us any less guilty? Maybe we didn’t know the details. But if we didn’t know, it was because we didn’t want to know.

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) A petty thief and vagrant is imprisoned for crimes he didn’t commit. It took him his father’s death to gather strength to fight for his own justice. An intense prison-drama cum court-room drama.
2) While Daniel Day-Lewis plays the lead character, the most praiseworthy performance is from Pete Postlethwaite as the helpless father and wrongfully accused man keeping his faith in justice until his last breath. His scenes with Daniel Day-Lewis in particular are well-written and performed.
3) The immense presence of Don Baker as Joe. A small role but equally profound screen presence.
4) Opening Credits: Bono and Gavin Friday – In the Name of the Father“.

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) Very informative & an absolute eye-opener revealing hidden facts on Shastri’s death. The death of a PM certainly needs a widespread discussion even with conspiracy theories.
2) HJ Bhabha death, The Mitrokhin Archive, etc are some of the most noteworthy points of the movie which cannot be undermined.

CONS –
1) Even with a talented pool of actors, there is less acting and more over-acting.
2) The primary structure is clearly copied from 12 Angry Men (1957)
3) Forgettable soundtrack.

PROS –
1) A grand debut for Edward Norton. The split personalities he played in his debut film works as a great precursor for his future projects with a similar theme like Fight Club (1999) and The Incredible Hulk (2008)
2) The great climactic plot-twist. Without this twist, the entire plot is stale.
3) Good supporting cast.

CONS –
1) Slow screenplay which is 20 minutes too long

QUOTE –

Cons –
1) This movie is a good watch for aspiring people in the sales industry but this is no Glengarry Glen Ross
