In the Mouth of Madness (1995)

CULT – 1

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) An insurance investigator is hired by a publishing house to investigate the disappearance of popular (and eccentric) horror novelist, Sutter Cane, and recover the manuscript for Cane’s final novel. The search led him to Hobb’s End, the fictional setting for many of Cane’s works.
2) A meta-horror movie where the book central character finally realizes that he was a character in the book all along.
3) Another John Carpenter homage to H. P. Lovecraft.

VERDICT – 3/5

PROS –
1) Retired lawman Wyatt Earp arrives in Tombstone, Arizona with his two brothers and their wives to settle down. But he’s reluctantly pulled into the same violent business when the town is wrecked by an outlaw gang called “The Cowboys” which led to the death of one of his brothers.
2) Made in 1993, the movie follows the classic western theme of good vs evil. The second-half of the movie is full of duels, and great gunfights.

CONS –
1) Val Kilmer’s performance as alcoholic Doc Holliday is quite annoying.
2) It’s highly overrated as one of the best western movies released in the 1990s. There is no way it can be compared to Unforgiven (1992), and Dances with Wolves (1990).

Verdict – 3/5

Pros –

1) Orson Welles as Captain Quinlan – unrecognizable with heavy make-up as the obese limping police captain
2) Opening scene – one continuous crane shot from the Mexican border to the bomb explosion

Cons –

1) The screenplay is incoherent with multiple sub-plots with ordinary outcomes
2) Marlene Dietrich – half-baked character

Verdict – 4/5

Pros –

1) The epic Climax.Nuclear holocaust plot twist.
2) While the movie appears to be a philosophical triumph criticizing religion over science, Dr. Zaius final lines turned the tables. (“The Forbidden Zone was once a paradise. Your breed made a desert of it, ages ago”).
3) Maurice Evans as Dr. Zaius

VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) “CAution LIve aniMAls” twist.
2) Charlton Heston cameo as Zaius gives a perfect homage to the original version.

CONS –
1) Though the climax is unexpected, it’s ambiguous.
2) We already have a definite version i.e. Planet of the Apes (1968) and this Tim Burton effort is not adding anything new.
3) Ari’s romantic angle is just making the movie more tedious.
