The Fly (1986)

STORY – 1

MUSIC – 1
CULT – 1

Verdict – 5/5

Pros –
1) An eccentric scientist’s experiment went wrong. The consequence is a body-horror nightmare.
2) Jeff Goldblum as Seth Brundle. His transformation or disintegration from a one version of “Brundlefly” to another grotesque version is incredible. Credits to the make-up team.
3) Howard Shore’s score.
4) Not a single subplot. The direction is top-notch and to the point.
5) The work-out scene, the arm-wrestling scene, the parturition nightmare are not for the faint-hearted.

Cons –

Videodrome (1983)

CULT – 1

Verdict – 4/5

Pros –

1) A surreal adventure. A semi-prophetic story from Cronenberg exploring the advent of TV as a tool to control the mind of the viewer.
2) CGI: belly-slit sequences, the gun’s fusion with Max’s hand
3) The scary subplot of Cathode Ray Mission – where homeless people are made to binge TV.
4) Body-horror – not palatable for weak-hearted

Cons –

1) The climax is not ambiguous but confusing.

Quote –

Brian O’Blivion: The battle for the mind of North America will be fought in the video arena: the Videodrome. The television screen is the retina of the mind’s eye. Therefore, the television screen is part of the physical structure of the brain. Therefore, whatever appears on the television screen emerges as raw experience for those who watch it. Therefore, television is reality, and reality is less than television.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)

CULT – 1

Verdict – 5/5

Pros –

1) Eerie soundtrack and cinematography along with signature dead-pan dialogue delivery from lead actors.
2) Yorgos Lanthimos truly inherited the legacy of body horror from Cronenberg. From the very scene of the film, the subtle body horror factor dominates the plot.
3) Barry Keoghan as Martin – the most punchable face in the town.
4) Screenplay – it’s shocking that the movie is not even nominated for any Golden Globe or BAFTA award for at least this category.

Cons –

1) Being a fantasy horror film, many questions are left unanswered like how Martin’s curse was actually working.

1) Ordinary plot but extraordinary direction
2) Eihi Shiina as Asami Yamazaki – not the best actress for an iconic role

Thirst (2009)

Verdict – 3/5

Pros –

1) Love Story of a priest turned reluctant-accidental-vampire.
2) The story is the corner-stone of this movie. From beginning to end the story is the mainstay of this film.It started as a sci-fi medical drama, later it converted into a love-triangle with steamy love-making scenes. The pen-ultimate part is body-horror/slasher and the climax is all about redemption of two lovers to eternity.

Cons –

1) 30 minutes too long.

for getting hurt in an accident!
No one gets criticized
for having cancer!
I went there to do good!
So what if I’m a vampire?”

Verdict – 3/5

Pros –

1) Stephen Lang as The Blind Man.
2) A tinge of Hitchcock’s “Psycho”. (e.g. The blind man’s home)

Cons –

1) The movie is falsely tagged as a horror film, while the element of body horror is dominating.
2) A story without a protagonist. The Blind Man had all my votes till we saw his underground prison. The 3 robbers do not deserve sympathy from anyone at any point of time.
3) A possible sequel ?
