PROS –
1) A young boy is captured by a modern-day witch, and the witch is planning to cook him for the dinner party. To stall her plan, the boy tells her three horror stories.
2) Cat from Hell – A hitman hired by a wealthy man to kill a cat. While the story is mediocre, the entire sequence where the cat kills the hitman by forcing itself down his throat and into his stomach was horrifying.
3) Lover’s Vow – A folklore sort of story where a demon spares a man’s life when he swears never to reveal what he saw or describe its appearance to anyone. The final scene where Carola begins transforming back into the monster is an achievement for the special effect team. The scene rivals the transformation scene from An American Werewolf in London (1981).

 

 

CONS –
1) Lot 249 – Michael McDowell failed to give justice to Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic horror short story. Even with a good star-cast, the screenplay and execution is childish. The iconic story deserves a full-length movie.

1) 5 rejected Black Mirror stories weaved around a haunted movie theater owned by The Projectionist (Mickey Rourke). Tediously formulaic anthology movie with a format very similar to Tales from the Crypt (1972).

PROS –
1) Stories of 6 different people who “died without repentance”, and finally a warning to the audience in the end.
2) Wish You Were Here: The tale of a Chinese statuette granting 3 wishes to the owner but with severe consequences.
3) Blind Alleys: Blind residents took revenge from their tormentor using his own dog in the most brutal way.
4) Poetic Justice: Arthur Grimsdyke (brilliantly played Peter Cushing) comes back from the dead to avenge his enemy.
5) Opening Credits: Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Bach

 

 

CONS –
1) Out of 6, the first 2 stories were just passable.

1) Janhvi Kapoor’s performance stands out in this mediocre horror movie.

1) I’m never expecting anything from an anthology film anyway. This is just a Netflix contractual project with the 4 directors.
2) All 4 stories are stale where you can smell the twist from a mile.

Black Sabbath (1963)

PROS –
1) 2 classic tales of horror. The kind of stories we hear as kids around a campfire.
2) “The Wurdalak” offers a gothic folk-tale of a vampire without any plot-twists. However, the Technicolor cinematography, makeup, and music will give audiences enough jump scares. The scene where the dead child appears outside in the cold and begs to be invited in, is a textbook folktale sequence.
3) “The Drop of Water” is a Twilight Zone kind of story where the jinxed ring transfers the curse to the bearer.
4) Boris Karloff’s prologue and epilogue are funny and frightful at the same time. The final scene where his character breaks the 4th wall and unveils the tricks behind the camera is equally bizarre.

 

CONS –
1) “The Telephone” is neither supernatural nor horror. It doesn’t fit with the other two tales of horror.

PROS –
1) I’ll rate LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS better than Black Mirror and Electric Dreams. The core of any sci-fi story can be explained in a few minutes and we don’t a 90 minutes episode for character development. The short duration of each episode is the biggest asset of the show.
2) Stories from various genres including Sci-Fi, Supernatural, Fantasy, Post-Apocalypse, Absurdism, Cyberpunk, etc.
3) Exceptional animation quality from various studios around the world. Every next episode is a surprise.
4) “Good Hunting” – Exploring the Huli jing mythology in Cyberpunk Hong-Kong
5) “Suits” – Who is the real invader?
6) “Zima Blue” – Absurdist robot.
7) “When the Yogurt Took Over” – A warning for the inevitable economic collapse.
8) Matthew Perryman Jones – Living in the Shadows

 

 
CONS –
1) “Sucker of Souls” – a plain storyline
2) “The Witness” – a mind-fuck story told for a zillionth time now.
3) “Helping Hand” – 127 Hrs in space
4) “Fish Night” – Great animation with a mediocre story

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

1) Meal Ticket – Liam Neeson as the cold-hearted impresario and Harry Melling as the limbless artist stole the show in this wintry tale.
2) The Gal Who Got Rattled – The sorrowful end of a budding love story.
3) All Gold Canyon – An uplifting climax of a Gold Miner.

 

CONS –
1) Anthology movies are destined to be doomed. Coen Bros being great writers themselves used a small collection of their short-stories and developed this project for Netflix. Interestingly, the story of a dybbuk which was already used in a prologue of their 2009 released A Serious Man belongs to this project.
2) Buster Scruggs – The most lifeless story.
