Love, Death & Robots (Season 1)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
MUSIC – 1
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 4/4

PROS –
1) I’ll rate LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS better than Black Mirror and Electric Dreams. The core of any sci-fi story can be explained in a few minutes and we don’t a 90 minutes episode for character development. The short duration of each episode is the biggest asset of the show.
2) Stories from various genres including Sci-Fi, Supernatural, Fantasy, Post-Apocalypse, Absurdism, Cyberpunk, etc.
3) Exceptional animation quality from various studios around the world. Every next episode is a surprise.
4) “Good Hunting” – Exploring the Huli jing mythology in Cyberpunk Hong-Kong
5) “Suits” – Who is the real invader?
6) “Zima Blue” – Absurdist robot.
7) “When the Yogurt Took Over” – A warning for the inevitable economic collapse.
8) Matthew Perryman Jones – Living in the Shadows

CONS –
1) “Sucker of Souls” – a plain storyline
2) “The Witness” – a mind-fuck story told for a zillionth time now.
3) “Helping Hand” – 127 Hrs in space
4) “Fish Night” – Great animation with a mediocre story

Harold and Maude (1971)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 1
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) An absurdist coming-of-age black comedy about a suicidal wealthy teenager boy in love with a psychopathic holocaust survivor octogenarian woman.
2) Their romantic hangouts at cemeteries, demolition sites, and industrial wastewater drew a stark analogy to their fascination with morbidity and death. David Fincher‘s Fight Club clearly borrowed heavily from this plot. Just like Tyler Durden and Marla Singer find their mental solace in support groups, Harold and Maude found each other at attending stranger’s funeral service.
3) A fresh soundtrack including “If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out” by Cat Stevens.
4) Harold’s hilarious suicide enactments to drove off his potential girlfriends.

CONS –
N/A

QUOTE –
Psychiatrist: A very common neurosis; particularly in this society, whereby the male child subconsciously wishes to sleep with his mother. Of course what puzzles me, Harold; is that you want to sleep with your grandmother.

Sorry to Bother You (2018)

CULT – 1

Verdict – 4/5

Pros –
1) One of the most important film of the decade. This absurdist sci-fi black comedy joined the ranks of other anti-consumerism movies like They Live, Fight Club and Idiocracy.
2) Kickass direction by debutant Boots Riley. It’s funny, racist, offensive and powerful satire like Get Out.
3) “I Got the S#*@ Kicked Out of Me!” – this show within the movie summarizes the modern sugar-coated dystopian TV contents.

Cons –
1) Climax is not ambiguous but vague.

Langston: “More like apples and the Holocaust.”
