VERDICT – 2/5

PROS –
1) An erotic murder-mystery with some strange cinematography.
2) Klaus Kinski is known for his sociopathic roles. This time he plays a subdued husband trying to solve the case.

CONS –
1) It’s an average movie with terrible acting and incoherent screenplay but still got some weird elements which keep the audiences hooked.

John: I’m looking for a blonde named Christine.
Concierge: Second floor, number five. You can’t go up. There’s already a man up there.
John: It will be more interesting.

CULT – 1

VERDICT – 3/4

PROS –
1) Behind the scene of a gargantuan size election across the nation. The sheer amount of hard work by the election commission, poll-officials, security officials to execute true democracy is extraordinary.
2) Modi filing nominations in Varanasi.
3) Following the campaign trail. From the old penniless Congress flag-bearer in Amethi to Pappu Ki Adi in Varanasi.

Black Sabbath (1963)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 1
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 5/5

PROS –
1) 2 classic tales of horror. The kind of stories we hear as kids around a campfire.
2) “The Wurdalak” offers a gothic folk-tale of a vampire without any plot-twists. However, the Technicolor cinematography, makeup, and music will give audiences enough jump scares. The scene where the dead child appears outside in the cold and begs to be invited in, is a textbook folktale sequence.
3) “The Drop of Water” is a Twilight Zone kind of story where the jinxed ring transfers the curse to the bearer.
4) Boris Karloff’s prologue and epilogue are funny and frightful at the same time. The final scene where his character breaks the 4th wall and unveils the tricks behind the camera is equally bizarre.

CONS –
1) “The Telephone” is neither supernatural nor horror. It doesn’t fit with the other two tales of horror.

Jacob’s Ladder (1990)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
ACTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 4/5

PROS –
1) A modern reinterpretation of An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce. A dying man clinging to his last breath imagining an entire lifetime in his last minutes.
2) Gripping direction and tight screenplay.
3) The movie got few surreal scenes which are the stuff nightmares are made of. Jacob stuck in a locked subway station; Jacob in a gurney cruising through human body parts in a ramshackle mental hospital.

“The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won’t let go of life, your memories, your attachments. They burn them all away. But they’re not punishing you. They’re freeing your soul. So the way he sees it, if you’re frightened of dying and… and you’re holding on, you’ll see devils tearing your life away. But if you’ve made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth. It’s just a matter of how you look at it, that’s all.”

Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones (2019)

CONTENT – 1
EXECUTION – 1
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 3/3

PROS –
1) Dave Chappelle in all its glory.
2) Louis C.K. did an SNL monologue on child molester and pedophiles. That bit pushed the envelope by making jokes out of this extremely inappropriate topic. Dave Chappelle clearly tore the envelope this time.
3) How Twitter screenshots from yesteryears are destroying careers. How T is different from L, G, & B. How anyone with a dick should shut up on abortion laws. How gun laws can be amended only if black people start hoarding guns.

Seriously, I wanna know. Like, wh-why is it… why is it that… that I can say the word “nigger” with impunity……but I can’t say the word “faggot”?”And she said, “Because, David, you are not gay.” I said, “Well, Renée…I’m not a nigger either.”

Batla House (2019)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 0
ACTOR – 0
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 0

VERDICT – 1/5

PROS –
1) Most commercially viable time for a project like Batla House Encounter when the entire nation is drenched in nationalist fervor.

CONS –
1) Absent supporting cast. Apart from Ravi Kishan, hardly any actor is well known.
2) “O Saki Saki” remix can only get cheap views on YouTube, otherwise the entire soundtrack is garbage. Background score is mainly ripping off Hans Zimmer from The Dark Knight (2008)

Animal Farm (1954)

STORY – 1
DIRECTOR – 1
MUSIC – 0
CULT – 1

VERDICT – 3/4

PROS –
1) The story of a revolution. The story of civilization. The story of the Soviet Union.
2) An animated movie is primarily targetting younger audiences and Halas and Batchelor justified this timeless novel with a stupendous adaptation.

CONS –
1) The novel is Orwellian and the ending is supposed to be bleak. The upbeat climax is against the spirit of the novel.
